About us

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) in Gwent has been operating in Gwent since 1969, initially with an in-patient unit for younger children, to which was added an adolescent unit in 1973. Currently the service only provides community based services at 3 domains. Community Embedded CAMHS which works closely with SPACE wellbeing Panels, Core Specialist CAMHS providing clinic based services and Emergency CAMHS which includes crisis Outreach team and Emergency liaison team.

The philosophy has always been one of helping children to remain with their families and offering out patient clinics in a wide variety of settings nearer to their homes. Full use of central resources is made and the multi-disciplinary teams have developed over the years with the psychiatry and nursing and therapy services integrating with the psychology service in 2009.

Service planning takes place on a health board wide and South East Wales basis using multi agency fora. This is currently under review with proposals for an all Wales planning group. Primary care services are planned on a locality basis using the Health board planning partnerships with local authority planning mechanisms
