Applications are invited from enthusiastic and capable doctors for the above post at CT3+ level in Anaesthetics and Critical Care within Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to commence from August 2023, with the possibility for extension after a term of 12 months.

This post is suitable for anaesthetists with a minimum of 2 years experience in core anaesthesia or 3 years ACCS training (at least 21 months anaesthesia AND at least 3 months intensive care) at CT3/4 or above level by the time the successful applicant is appointed. The successful applicant will work as part of a close-knit, dynamic and experienced team to deliver anaesthetic and critical care services at Barnsley, covering a wide range of surgical specialities, including the provision of anaesthesia services to obstetrics and paediatrics in a busy district general hospital.

The successful applicant will also benefit from support from the DME/ college tutor and a named educational supervisor to help achieve CT3/4 equivalent (Stage 1 Top Up) Training requirements as set out by the new Royal College of Anaesthetists curriculum.

The role is also ideally suited for a prospective candidate with an interest in pursuing a CESR programme and will receive the appropriate support to apply for that Trust role.

Main duties of the job

A consultant anaesthetist/intensivist will locally supervise daytime elective theatre/Obstetric/Intensive Care work. A combination of directly supervised and solo theatre work for service provision will be expected. Out of hours work (1 in 8 rota covering one of three sectors- Emergencies/Obstetrics/Intensive Care) will be supported by other on-call-sector middle grades, as well as direct/indirect supervision from the consultant on call.

We have strengths and expertise in research, critical care, ultrasound courses/faculty e.g. FUSIC/FICE, day case anaesthesia, education (including simulation) and management and would welcome enquiries about specific opportunities in these and other areas.

Job description

Job responsibilities

1. The post holder will be responsible to the consultants in anaesthetics/ intensive care, in the management of all patients.

2. The post-holder will be expected to:

Anaesthetise, and deliver all usual aspects of peri-operative care, under appropriate supervision. A combination of directly-supervised and solo lists for service provision will be expected.

Participate in the on-call rota, and have the experience to join the middle grade on call rota covering obstetrics or ICU or 1st on call as needed.

3. The post-holder will need to deputise from time to time, for absent colleagues, as far as this is consistent with above duties to cover short term sickness gaps. Short term gap cover will be done on a rotating schedule to ensure fairness and equitability but volunteers are always sought first and gap cover is paid on very competitive internal locum rates

4. The post-holder may occasionally be required to perform additional duties in emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

5. To undertake regular appraisal.

6. The post holder will be expected and encouraged to participate in clinical audit/QI and research activities and the implementation of clinical governance measures.

7. To attend departmental and governance meetings according to usual departmental practice.

8. Comply with all local policies including, annual and study leave policies.

9. To keep abreast of current knowledge for Continued Professional Development (CPD) and Continued Medical Education (CME) purposes.
