Fixed Term Specialty Registrar Post (Full-Time)

Available from 1st June 2023 for up to 12 months

Respiratory Medicine

We are looking for one post at ST3 or above in Respiratory and General Medicine at Newham University Hospital, to include a 1 in 8 on call commitment with prospective cover. The post holder requires MRCP (or European equivalent) and previous NHS experience.

The post is ideal for candidates wishing to pursue a career in Acute Medicine or Respiratory Medicine. The post will offer the opportunity to develop skills in bronchoscopy, pleural procedures and pleural ultrasound. The post holder will gain experience in respiratory medicine including Covid pneumonia, TB, lung cancer and acute NIV and CPAP. There are ample research and career development opportunities within the department to help candidates apply for a training number in acute and respiratory medicine.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • The post holder will join 3 other registrars on the firm to share ward duties including managing inpatients including those on acute NIV under the care of the respiratory consultants, chest clinics and respiratory referrals within the hospital.
  • The post holder will be expected to attend the morbidity and mortality (M&M) meetings and diagnostic Lung MDT meeting.
  • Training will be available for pleural ultrasound, pleural procedures and bronchoscopy.
  • The post holder will be encouraged to take part in audit, governance including incident reporting and education.
  • Participation in acute medical on call rota with prospective cover
  • The posts are ideal for candidates wishing to pursue a career in Acute Medicine or Respiratory Medicine. There are ample career development opportunities within the department to help candidates apply for training number in acute and respiratory medicine.


Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial experience in General Internal Medicine within the NHS
  • Experience in Respiratory Medicine within the NHS
  • Experience in teaching


Desirable

  • Higher Degree i.e MSc, PhD or equivalent
  • Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio


Skills

Essential

  • Phlebotomy, Cannulation, Arterial Blood Gas
  • ALS accreditation


Desirable

  • Lumbar puncture Pleural procedures
  • Level 1 pleural ultrasound accreditation


Knowledge

Essential

  • Excellent knowledge in general and acute internal medicine
  • A broad range of knowledge in other relevant disciplines


Desirable

  • Knowledge in specialist respiratory medicine


Qualifications

Essential

  • MRCP (or EU equivalent)
  • GMC registration with a license to practice work permit for UK


Desirable

  • Higher Degree i.e MSc, PhD or equivalent


Medical Management

Essential

  • Demonstrable skills in department management
  • An understanding of Clinical Governance
  • Experience in performing clinical audit


Desirable

  • Awareness of current issues in NHS
  • NHS complaint handling
