A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen for highly motivated, enthusiastic and experienced individual to lead our Dermatology Service. The role of Department manager will lead our rapidly growing service, manage a caseload of patients with dermatological skin conditions and be an expert point of contact for junior colleagues.

Dermatology Outpatients Department is primarily based at Doncaster Royal Infirmary but as department manager there will be an expectation you will work at Bassetlaw and Mexborough Montagu. The department cares for patients with acute and chronic skin conditions, and with skin cancers. We provide a wide range of nurse led outpatient clinics, surgery, phototherapy, complex wound care and patch testing amongst many other aspects. We also care for inpatients with complex dermatological needs

Dermatology experience is essential.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for assessment, planning, implementing and evaluating care for patients who require treatment of Dermatology conditions and skin cancers in the Secondary care setting. To promote a high standard of Dermatology clinical care both in secondary care by empowerment through coaching, teaching and facilitating.

As the department manager the post holder will co-ordinate and manage Dermatology clinic activity through resource management and staff development. To lead and participate in nurse led audit ensuring a high standard of research bases nursing care is achieved.

The post-holder will provide nurse led Dermatology clinics, nurse led surgery and skin cancer clinics for both new and follow up patients.

Carry out full assessment of patients and reach valid, reliable conclusions, which manage risk.

Manage a patient caseload and make appropriate referrals to others.

Provide audit and statistical information regarding the services provided.

  • Work autonomously in conjunction with the Consultant Dermatologist in the development of a patient centred intermediate care Dermatology service, working across professional and organisational boundaries.
  • Provide clinical lead in phototherapy, chronic disease management, cryotherapy, wound management, systemic monitoring clinics, skin cancer clinics in secondary care
  • Complete necessary training for the scope of professional practice relevant to your clinical area and once competent assess and supervise the training needs of colleagues in the development of their scope skills.

Person Specification

Organisational Skills


  • Able to accommodate the demands of the post with flexible working practice as required with good attendance and high standards of clinical care
  • Precise and methodical working practice and demonstrate ability to work and manage the ward day to day unsupervised


  • Provide evidence of supervisor/ implementation of teaching programmes for student nurses, eg preceptorship education, mentorship
  • Evidence of change management and involvement in service development

Qualifications and Training


  • RN with current registration
  • Up-to-date knowledge of professional issues
  • Teaching certificate
  • Qualified Non - Medical Prescriber or already completing the course
  • Dermatology Skin Surgery Certificate
  • Demonstrate professional post-registration development


  • Post Registration specialist courses
  • Participation in management development courses
  • Degree qualification
  • Undertaken Dermoscopy Course



  • Proven dermatology experience at Band 6 level
  • Scope roles relevant to dermatology specialism
  • Evidence of ward/department management as nurse in charge
  • Development of knowledge and skills in dermatology nursing
  • Experience of carrying out and monitoring PDA process


  • Evidence of management responsibilities already undertaken

Interpersonal Skills


  • Demonstrate good verbal communication skills with multidisciplinary team/clients/relatives
  • Demonstrate the ability to deliver educational and clinical skills training
  • Evidence of ability to work independently


  • Demonstrate knowledge of dealing with conflict supporting staff through mechanisms such as clinical supervision
