Job summary

Now is an exciting time to join University Hospital Coventry & Warwickshire as we recruit to a Nurse role for Coventry & Rugby's Targeted Lung Health Programme (TLHC). The NHS long term plan published in 2019 established a plan to diagnose 75% of people with cancer at an early stage by 2028, and this post will be key to the continuing development of the Targeted lung health screening programme which started in this area June 2021.

This is a pivotal role and will support the clinical lead nurse manager to provide and develop a high-quality Lung Health Check Service across Coventry & Warwickshire.

The post is fixed term until 30/6/2024 however it expected that this will be extended in the future as the programme expands and becomes a national screening programme.

Main duties of the job

The purpose of the role is to facilitate the clinical flow of the lung screening participants who have met the criteria for a low dose CT scan of the thorax. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with key stakeholders and the lead nurse to develop this service. This role will support the delivery and successful implementation of the screening programme in Coventry & Warwickshire. The TLHC nurse will have clinical oversight of patients on the screening pathway and facilitate onward referrals and results as dictated by the clinical leads; multidisciplinary team will support the role.

The post holder will be expected to be flexible, responsive, and provide specialist knowledge to the patient (and their carers where applicable). Attention to detail is of paramount importance and excellent organisation and communication skills

The successful candidate will be a highly motivated, innovative, compassionate, and enthusiastic registered nurse, who strives to deliver person-centred care, supported by excellent clinical knowledge and skills, is able to work autonomously and is confident in their own decision making and able to work to ensure agreed standards, objectives and targets are met. You ideally will have substantial experience working within the respiratory specialty either in acute or primary care.

The team is based at Woodend Health Centre in Coventry. Please note this post is predominantly office based role speaking to patients over the telephone.

Job responsibilities

  • Accountable for own actions in accordance with Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute towards corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies, at all times.
  • Developed communication skills enabling maintenance of high-quality service and ensuring timely management and resolution of unexpected events and situations. Ability to communicate with all members of the multi-professional teams locally such as Healthy Lifestyles Coventry, GP practices, Hospital and Community Teams and the West Midlands Cancer Alliance.
  • A knowledgeable team member, supporting staff, service, and policy development within a defined area/specialty.
  • Participating in providing training of identified staff groups within defined areas (where required).
  • Inputting data and being involved in audit and/or information collection.
  • Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce, and resource data available.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
  • To undertake and promote practice sensitive to the needs of patients and families from multicultural backgrounds.
  • Attend Screening Review meetings where TLHC patients will be discussed and contribute to and support the work of colleagues in the Multi-Disciplinary Team. Clinical Duties / Responsibilities
  • Complete required TLHC standard training packages including IRMER training and mandatory TLHC training. You will also have an opportunity to complete ARTP -Spirometry Training and work alongside colleagues in the respiratory diagnostic team to develop & maintain competency.
  • Provide specialist nursing advice and informing patient of results from diagnostic tests.
  • Undertake comprehensive health and risk assessments.
  • Assess patients suitability to proceed to a diagnostic test, explain and take consent for the diagnostic test, and submit the diagnostic test referral form.
  • Participating in the writing of protocols, guidelines, patient information and documentation required for service review and development.
  • Supporting the clinical nurse manager in identifying and assessing complex clinical and nonclinical issues, implementing resolutions and monitoring/auditing outcomes.
  • A supportive resource for staff, advising on national, local and Trust policy and procedures/guidelines, ensuring that clinical governance is embedded in practice.
