Job summary

This is a great opportunity for an experienced Children's Oncology Nurse to join our team in our Oncology Unit within the Paediatric Ward at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford.

The Children's Oncology & Haematology Centre is a dedicated suite for children receiving oncology or haematology treatment. It provides a modern, family-friendly and safe environment for children to receive their chemotherapy and care. The unit has shared care with Birmingham Children's Hospital.

We are looking for dynamic, inspired and enthusiastic oncology nurse who has a passion to care.

The role is primarily to work in the oncology/haemology unit but it would also include working on the general paediatric ward when required.

We work closely with our Emergency Department and we look after acutely ill children. We have an 8 bedded Children's Assessments Unit within which our staff are able to develop skills in triage and PGD. On our ward we provide advanced care to children requiring interventions such as tracheostomy care, CPAP or high flow oxygen.

We also have an experienced team of specialist nurses in Gastroenterology, Respiratory, and Epilepsy who support our patients and learning needs of our team. At The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital we have a Children's Out Patient facility along with a Medical day unit.

Main duties of the job

To be responsible for assessing individual patient care needs and developing, implementation and evaluating plans of care for a group of patients in accordance with agreed policies and professional guidelines.

The post is primarily to work with in the Oncology /haematology unit based with the Children unit, but the individual would be expected to work on the general Paediatric ward as and when required to meet the service needs.

Along side the Oncology and Haematology unit, we also provide care for 33 in-patients in our purpose built facility at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford. We care for children from ages 0-16 years, and you can be also gain experience in caring for children with medical, surgical, orthopaedic, complex needs, CAMHS respiratory and metabolic conditions.

Person Specification

Professional / Technical Quali

Essential

  • Paediatric Nursing qualification, RSCN/RN child branch
  • Practical Oncology Course
  • Blood transfusion training
  • PILS


Desirable

  • Teaching and Assessing Course


Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Awareness of relevant / current professional issues
  • Oncology experience in either a Level 2B enhanced POSCU or Principal Treatment Centre - at least 12 months within the last 24 months
  • Ability to recognise and manage sepsis including patients with febrile neutropenia.


Desirable

  • Exposure to delivering palliative care in either a hospital, hospice or home setting.


Skills and Ability

Essential

  • Ability to work and communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team setting.
  • Evidence of excellent communication skills including verbal, non verbal and written.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Competent in administration of SACT for malignant disease.


Desirable

  • Microsoft office PC and Sema Pas skills
