Consultant Psychiatrist in Older People, Beech Ward

Employer
Devon Partnership NHS Trust
Location
Torquay
Salary
£88,364 to £119,133 a year
Closing date
7 Jun 2023
Welcome to Devon Partnership Trust! We would like to invite you to apply for the Consultant Psychiatrist post in Older People at our award winning Inpatient Unit. Beech ward is a 16 bedded inpatient ward for functionally ill older people. Beech ward is located at Torbay Hospital, Torquay. The expansive rural nature of Devon means that inpatient resources are often some distance from patients' homes. There are units for functionally ill older people in all three main population centres Torbay (Beech Unit), Exeter (Rougemont) & Barnstaple (Meadow View). Older people who need admission for organic problems are admitted to Belvedere Unit in Exeter.

The Beech Unit team has always sought ways of delivering more person centred care and in 2011 we abolished conventional ward rounds and piloted, then adopted Planning My Recovery Meetings (PMR meeting). Each patient on the ward has their own PMR meeting weekly with the consultant and key members of the Unit team.

This post is suitable as a first NHS consultant, an existing or post-retirement consultant with a broad level of general adult psychiatric expertise. International candidates are welcome to apply. Experience of working in adult community mental health services is preferable but support will be given to doctors wishing to move from other psychiatric specialties or roles.

Approved Clinician status at appointment is preferable but those who would be eligible eg doctors applying from abroad, will be supported to obtain this authority

Main duties of the job

The Beech Team have a supportive ethos and are keen to hear from patients who use the service how we can improve our service. As a team we have developed our own team Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) which is on display for all patients and visitors to see.

You will chair the PMR meetings on Beech Unit and see new patients soon after they are admitted. Your trainee will do the day to day ward work including the diagnosis and treatment for physical illness, referring to Torbay hospital medical staff as needed, admissions and mental state reviews.

Many of the patients admitted to the ward will be under provisions of the Mental Health Act. The post holder will be Responsible Clinician for those patients. The post holder is expected to use the provisions of the Mental Capacity Act and Mental health Act whilst managing patients on the ward. The post holder is also expected to work closely with the community teams to enable smoot transition of care from inpatient care to community care and vice versa. The post holder is expected to lead the professional meetings, risk management meetings, as appropriate for patients with complex multi-agency needs to facilitate holistic care for them.

You will take part in on-call rota and other consultants from the area will be expected to provide cross-cover for leave.
