Job summary
This Core Trainee level (CT1-2) role within Palliative Medicine provides experience delivering Palliative Medicine in the hospital settling alongside dedicated time (1-2 days/week) to develop and deliver education, audit and quality improvement activities. There is also the opportunity to participate in research project work with the research team at LOROS hospice as part of this time.
Main duties of the job
Clinical Duties:
Participate in the face-face holistic assessment and management of hospital inpatients who have been referred to the hospital Specialist Palliative Care Team Prescribing of appropriate palliative and anticipatory medications to manage common symptoms of patients Undertake discussions with patients and families, including advance care planning when appropriate. Provide clinical supervision of Junior doctors on medical and surgical wards about palliative care issues Provide medical input into the Palliative Care Team across UHL. Help ensure safe and effective care when people move between different care settings, by adding to discharge letters, making appropriate referrals and providing guidance about medicine authorisations.
Non-Clinical Duties:
Participate in clinical governance activities including palliative care morbidity and mortality and clinical governance meetings and active engagement with the local quality improvement programme. Undertake audits in line with the palliative care audit and quality improvement programme, with opportunities to supervise the MDT designing and undertaking relevant audit tools Teaching: 1) Delivery of peer education throughout the hospital 2) Participate in regular teaching programmes, for example with medical students and ward teams 3) Work with the wider palliative care MDT to design, develop, deliver and evaluate bespoke teaching sessions relating to palliative and end of life care

The UHL Specialist Palliative Care team provides specialist assessment and support, in an advisory capacity, to inpatients with identified palliative care needs.
The appointment is available from August 2023 until August 2024.
This post would be ideal for Trainees who wish to develop CMT1-2 level competencies and apply for a specialty training programme in the future, or who wish to gain good palliative care skills as part of their professional practice.
An Educational Supervisor will be allocated.
