Clinical Fellow (ST3 or ST4 level) in Medical Microbiology, Fixed Term Contract.
This is a full-time replacement post for a Clinical Fellow who has gone on to take up a Consultant Microbiologist post. The successful candidate will be joining a team of 5 Consultants in microbiology, virology and infection (4 Medical Consultants, 1 Consultant Clinical Scientist), 1 Specialist Microbiologist and another Clinical Fellow in Medical Microbiology for East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust [EKHUFT] which includes 3 acute main hospital sites at William Harvey Hospital [WHH] in Ashford, Canterbury Hospital in Canterbury and the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital in Margate. The microbiology laboratory for the Trust is sited at WHH, Ashford. However, the clinical microbiology and infection team work across and at all 3 hospital sites.]
Main duties of the job
The appointee, together with Consultant colleagues, will be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive and efficient clinical microbiology, virology and infection prevention and control service to East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust [EKHUFT] and other users of the service, as detailed in the Job Description.
Maintaining Continuous Professional Development will be an expectation and the candidate will be given at least 2 hours a week protected time towards CPD activities.
Subject to assessment and progress on the job, there will be a once a month 1st on-call (Friday 1700 to Monday 0900) with a covering 2nd on-call Consultant, with an accompanying on-call supplement to go with]

Job responsibilities
Clinical practice and liaison:
The post holder will participate in providing medical microbiology services under consultant supervision.
Attend ward rounds or MDMs to/with specific units (e.g. haemato/oncology, renal medicine, neurology, SCBU and orthopaedics, intensive care and high dependency units) to give advice on any cases as required with, or on behalf of the medical microbiologists, and report back to the medical staff.
Appropriate involvement in preparation of policies, clinical and antimicrobial guidelines relevant to clinical microbiologist duties and diagnosis and management of infection.
Providing advice regarding appropriate specimens and investigations
Providing antibiotic treatment advice to users.
Be involved in policy and SOP preparation and approval.
Compliance with health and safety and security requirements and with agreed SOPs and investigational algorithms.
The appointee will be expected to participate and familiarise with outbreak investigations, RCAs and post infection reviews.
