We require an experienced Practice Educator to work within our operating theatre departments at Barnet and Edgeware theatres to support staff in developing the advanced skills required to provide effective nursing care . Excellent clinical, leadership and communication skills are essential along with the ability to work in an innovative way. The successful candidate will be passionate about education, quality and safety as well as acting as an excellent role model.

The ideal candidate must be a Registered Nurse with experience of operating department nursing. The ability to build relationships with staff at all stages of their career to support them with the development of skills and competencies is essential.

Main duties of the job

  • To be a clinical expert in all levels of Theatre nursing and to provide 'hands on' supervision of staff in clinical practice to promote the acquisition of new skills and knowledge.
  • In conjunction with team leaders and other members of the unit education team to be responsible for the assessment, supervision and development of all members of the nursing team.
  • In conjunction with other members of the unit education team to contribute to the planning, development and implementation of education and training programmes and opportunities for all members of the nursing staff.
  • To jointly co-ordinate, develop and manage the Theatre preceptorship course, Student Nurse / ODP's on Placement
  • To assist in the co-ordination and development of the Introduction / Induction of new staff in Theatres
  • To develop and run the band 6 development programme
  • To be part of the Theatre Coordinator Team and cover any Coordinator shifts when colleagues are unavailable.
  • To carry out audits and reviews of practice and policies within the unit
  • To lead, or contribute to, the development of clinical practice polices and evidence-based practice as appropriate
  • To lead, or contribute to, the implementation of new policies and procedures

Job responsibilities

  • To act as a clinical role model and demonstrate clinical expertise and credibility in practice for at least 40% of time in the clinical area and work autonomously when required
  • When clinically based ensure the maintenance of a safe clinical environment and working practices conducive to patient care.
  • When working clinically to be responsible for the assessment of patient care needs, to develop, implement and evaluate plans of care
  • To undertake all nursing procedures in accordance with Trust and unit policies and procedures, and ensure that these are understood and adhered to by all staff when supporting staff in clinical areas.
  • Maintain and ensure clear and effective communication with patients and relatives. When dealing with difficult situations, ensure empathy and reassurance during the assessment, care and evaluation of patient needs.
  • To ensure accurate and comprehensive nursing records are maintained using appropriate documentation.
  • To establish effective working relationships with all members of the multi-disciplinary team and to promote good communication and a multi-disciplinary approach to patient care.
  • Review unit policies, guidelines and competency documents with reference to trust and national policies and guidelines.
  • Carry out reviews of evidence and literature reviews as required for the development of policies and guidelines within the unit.
  • Develop, or contribute to the development, of unit policies and guidelines
  • Implement, or assist with the implementation, of new unit and trust policies and guidelines.
  • To encourage and foster a culture which supports learning from adverse or untoward events and to provide relevant training and support.

Experience

Essential

  • Significant and demonstrable experience in theatre practice
  • Experience in managing staff including appraisals, performance, absence, selection and recruitment
  • Budgetary experience particularly in staff and consumable cost
  • Experience in service development and support in change management
  • Extensive Knowledge in Education and Training within theTheatre Complex
