Job summary

The Emergency Department has an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, highly motivated and dynamic Advanced Clinical Practitioner to join our growing team of ACPs.

Working alongside the nursing and medical team you will be responsible for the assessment, management and referral / discharge of patients who present with a wide variety of illness and be an instrumental part of the paediatric resus team. We are looking for an enthusiastic and self-motivated practitioner, who is able to deliver high quality care, provide education and strong leadership to members of the multidisciplinary team. You will be supported through regular clinical supervision, individual learning plans, on-going education and access to a rapidly expanding team of ACPs to provide mentorship and support. We run a regular teaching programme and there is access to quality improvement training and participation in projects associated with this.

Applicants will need to have successfully completed a recognised ACP training programme. A robust clinical portfolio is a key requirement, and this should demonstrate that the applicant has achieved core competencies.

Main duties of the job

  • Provide the core ACP role which is to assess, diagnose and treat patients with undifferentiated clinical presentations with appropriate supervision in the Emergency Department.
  • Work within the ED doctor rota once deemed competent and completed appropriate competencies and participate in departmental teaching programme.
  • Integrate with the multi-professional team within and outside of the Emergency Department amd demonstrate effective mulit-disciplinary team working.
  • Participate in and/or lead clinical research which will guide practice developments.
  • Ensure that Clinical Governance standards are fully met with annual involvement in QI/ Audit projects.
  • Develop as a clinical leader and act as a positive role model.
  • Promote and support trainee, new and experienced ACPs as well as others developing or working in advanced and specialist roles to maximise their potential.
  • Contribute to the development of local guidelines and standards.
  • Report to the Head of Nursing and Lead Consultant for the ACP programme acting as an expert team member for the effective delivery of the Advanced / Emergency Care Practitioner service.

  • CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • To work in a confident and competent manner within their own scope of professional practice and guidelines (e.g. NMC competency and accreditation ).
    • Practice autonomously and be self-directed.
    • Undertake assessment of individuals using a range of different assessment methods, which may include physical examination, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests or advanced health needs assessment obtaining consent.
    • Draw on a diverse range of knowledge in their decision-making to determine evidence-based therapeutic interventions; this may include prescribing medication and actively monitoring the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions.
    • To actively seek and participate in peer review of their own practice.
    • To deliver and participate in the safe clinical care of patients.
    • To assume direct responsibility for the management of patients within own case load and for the supervision of junior members in the multidisciplinary team when experience dictates.
    • To appropriately assess, examine, investigate, diagnose and treat patients, resulting in the safe management and appropriate referral and/or discharge of patients within the scope of their professional practice and abilities.
    • To maintain own clinical development by keeping abreast of new treatments and technologies within the field of emergency medicine.
    • To contribute towards the review and development of integrated care pathways and clinical guidelines to ensure a standardised approach to clinical care.
    • To ensure accurate documentation and records of patient care are kept.
    • To contribute to the development of assessment systems, processes and tools, across clinical and/or assessment areas.
    • To actively implement effective systems and processes for infection control management .

    Essential

    • NMC Registered
    • Diploma is Advanced Nurse Practitioner
    • ALS /APLS
    • Senior Critical Care or Emergency department experience
