An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Sleep Physiologist to join the team in the Sleep Service, Trafford General Hospital, Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

The Sleep Service is a modern dynamic unit servicing a large area of the North West. It has a CPAP user base of over 8,000 patients and provides a wide range of services including diagnosis and treatment of non-respiratory sleep disorders. It is actively involved in the teaching of students on the PTP and STP courses at Manchester Metropolitan University.

Main duties of the job

The position will involve:

Performing and analysing in-patient and outpatient sleep studies (including respiratory polygraphy, full video polysomnography, multiple sleep latency testing, maintenance of wakefulness testing and actigraphy).

CPAP issue and follow up (face-to-face and remote clinics).

Teaching, training and mentoring of students and junior staff.

Supervision and line management of junior staff, stock control and procurement

The service encourages and supports flexible working (including home working where appropriate) but the successful applicant may be expected to cover evening and night shifts depending on service demand.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Masters degree in physiological or biological science or equivalent experience.
  • Undergraduate degree in physiological or biological science.
  • Registered with RCCP, AHCS or BRPT.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.


Desirable

  • Holds RPSGT qualification or eligible to apply.
  • Sleep medicine specific qualification.
  • Management qualification.
  • Teaching qualification.


Experience

Essential

  • Minimum four years post registration experience in sleep medicine.
  • Competent in performing, scoring and interpreting full video polysomnography.
  • Experience of CPAP issue and after care with complex patients.
  • Experience of teaching/mentoring.
  • Experience in working as part of a multi-disciplinary team.


Desirable

  • Experience of lung function testing.
  • Completed training for trainers course within last 3 years.
  • Management/HR experience.
  • Experience in treating patients with complex non-invasive ventilation, e.g., BiPAP and ASV.
  • Experience of working with patients with learning difficulties.
  • Experience in research/audit
  • Experience in stock control and procurement.


Skills

Essential

  • Ability to work autonomously.
  • Ability to work as a team leader and motivator.
  • Ability to keep accurate documentation.
  • Ability to work under pressure and to meet deadlines. This includes planning highly complex activities.


Desirable

  • Skilled in use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint.
  • Experience in medical electronic maintenance.
  • Experience in psychological assessment and treatment.
  • Experience in use of Epic software.


Knowledge

Essential

  • High level understanding of respiratory physiology and pathology.
  • High level understanding of sleep physiology and pathology.


Desirable

  • Experience of using motivational psychology.


Other

Essential

  • Prepared to undertake further study as required.
  • Prepared to work unsociable hours on a rostered system (to include evening and night shifts)
