Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a substantive Consultant Obstetrician/Gynaecologist. The post holder will have Obstetrics and Gynaecology experience to support the Clinical Director in Quality Improvement and in meeting labour ward standards as per RCOG guidelines and as part of the Clinical Business Unit (CBU) along with meeting other CBU requirements in gynaecology. The post holder will work closely with colleagues in continuing the development of services and resources within the CBU.

Our Labour ward (Barnsley Birthing Centre, BBC) and specialist Gynaecology services were refurbished in June 2015 and we have a modernised birthing centre with 3 private water birthing suites. Our Gynaecology Inpatient ward offers 6 beds alongside a newly furbished Ambulatory Care unit. The job plan will allow the service the ability to flex the sessions to meet specific demands.

Main duties of the job

Obstetrics

The Obstetric service provides a comprehensive local service, and the team manage all midwifery services in the hospital and the community. Progress towards improved continuity of care has been considerable and the development of the role of midwifery staff has been significant. The unit has been praised for its early adoption of Saving Babies Lives recommendations and progress in achieving recent requirements nationally.

There are multidisciplinary specialist clinics such as Medical Disorders, Fetal Medicine, Perinatal Mental Health, Preterm Clinic etc.

The post is envisaged to support the obstetrics and gynaecology service due to the increase in demand in both these areas. In addition, routine acute inpatient and outpatient Obstetrics & Gynaecology service will be expected to be delivered by the successful candidate on a timetabled basis.

Gynaecology

There are well established services providing, in addition to General Gynaecology, accredited specialised clinics including Colposcopy, Urogynaecology, 2 week wait Cancer referral, Hysteroscopy, Vulval,EPAU and Termination services. There is a new Gynaecology Day Assessment unit providing service over 5 days during the week

The Obs & Gynae Department is currently supported by 10 Consultants, 2 Specialty Doctors, 8 whole time equivalent tier two doctors, and 9 whole time equivalent tier one doctors.

To provide with consultant colleagues, an effective Obstetrics and Gynaecology service to Barnsley Hospital, including:

Working closely with the multidisciplinary team to provide a high quality Obstetric and Gynaecology service

Advising clinical colleagues on matters within his/her sphere of expertise

Liaising with other health care organisations, Social Services, General Practitioners and voluntary organisations as required

Responsibility for keeping services up-to-date and giving direction to future developments

Contributing to postgraduate and continuing medical education activity

Undertaking medical teaching examination and accreditation duties as required

Contributing, if appropriate, to the training of nurses, midwives, paramedical, scientific and technical staff

Participating in the formal appraisal of junior medical staff in accordance with guidelines from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and the Postgraduate Dean. A commitment to continued professional development audit and personal appraisal.

To participate in developing a satisfactory and consistent quality of clinical services by establishing appropriate systems, agreeing standards and ensuring standards are met

Participating in audit and ensuring outcomes are implemented

Contributing towards research projects within the hospital

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

• Full GMC registration
• MRCOG or equivalent
• CCST or equivalent
• Entry on the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee

Desirable

• Special interest accreditation ATSM or equivalent experience in obstetric medicine
• Higher Degree
• Evidence of research and or publication
