Job summary

We are delighted to advertise this part time substantive Band 6 Upper Gastro-Intestinal Cancer Specialist Nurse position based in Worthing Hospital which is part of the cancer centre trust, University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.

This post will offer the successful candidate the opportunity to work within a team of three UGI Cancer CNSs and the wider MDT, providing outstanding patient care and supporting service development within the UGI Cancer nursing service.

We are looking for a dynamic, enthusiastic, adaptable, and self-motivated individual who is passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of patients affected by cancer, whilst gaining experience in cancer care.

As a service we are keen to encourage ongoing professional development. The post holder will be able to build on existing skills, as well as develop new skills, that can improve and enhance the UGI cancer patients' pathway.

Main duties of the job

To develop clinical excellence, leadership, and innovation within a group of specialties, through specialist knowledge

The post-holder will have responsibility and accountability for supporting a caseload of patients through the cancer pathway, from suspected cancer, new cancer diagnosis, treatment, and those with recurrent or advanced disease, acting as patient advocate and keyworker

To holistically assess and plan care for patients with complex needs, planning, evaluating, coordinating and communicating care, to streamline and support patients through pathway

To work autonomously with the support and guidance of the multi-disciplinary team.

To assist band 7 CNSs in the development and support of MDT, nursing, and allied health professionals, acting as an expert resource

To use specialist nursing skills and knowledge to holistically assess, plan care and evaluate needs and interventions for in-patients and out-patients, with suspected cancer, confirmed cancer, undergoing curative or palliative treatment for cancer, or with recurrent or advanced disease. There will be close working with specialist centres. Support Band 7s to develop services. Also to act as an expert resource, assess, contribute and deliver education to patients/carers, medical, nursing, AHP and social care colleagues and students, including primary and community care teams

Job responsibilities

  • Act as a key worker for a clinical case load, communicating complex and life-altering clinical information, under guidance of the MDT as appropriate.
  • To meet patients at diagnosis and provide specialist assessment and support.
  • Support people to access, select and interpret complex technical information to enable informed choice and decision making
  • Provide clinical expertise, specialist advice and support across services
  • Put quality at the heart of practice by delivering evidence based individualised care, actively integrating theory and practice, through complex holistic needs assessment, care planning and evaluation, to maximise physical and psychological health.
  • Assess patients information needs and provide or signpost to relevant information.
  • Develop clinical expertise to assess and manage, complex and specialised interventions, including advanced skills, knowledge and nurse led work, which could also include performing some interventions.

  • Oncology or Speciality qualification or experience
  • Evidence of continued Professional development
