Job summary

The Luisa Martindale Building is opening soon. This is an opportunity for a band 5 staff nurse to work in a brand-new modern hospital. We work closely with all the teams associated with the acute admissions unit and accept patients who are elderly and frail with multiple medical conditions including experiencing symptoms of delirium and different stages of Dementia.

Applicants will be working our established Multi-Disciplinary teams of Consultant,junior doctors, nurses , physiotherapist, occupational therapist and dedicated flow coordinator who are constantly striving to improve the care experience for all patients and their relatives.

Main duties of the job

Caring for unwell elderly and frail patients with differing underlying chronic conditions , enable staff to have many learning opportunities. Some patient may have cognitive impairment. This allows nurses to gain knowledge and understanding of polypharmacy.

We provide excellent Palliative care for our patients approaching the end stage of their natural life, promoting comfort and emotional support for them and their families. This special time offers valuable moments to give compassionate care, that is patient centered focusing on symptom advance care planning and quality of life.

We are supported by a practice educator for specialty medicine who will give advise and encourage you to continue in your continued professional development. You will be given a trust induction , ward induction and access to a robust preceptorship programme aimed at supporting you to develop within the first few months.

Job responsibilities

  • Provides effective, safe, evidence based patient care in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) Code of Conduct.
  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates individualised evidence based patient care.
  • Works in accordance with ward philosophy and nursing model.
  • Effectively processes admissions & transfers and plans discharges inaccordance with UHSussex policy and standards.
  • Actively participates in promotion of education for patients, their relatives and colleagues with consideration to resources available.
  • Ensures provision of all drugs as prescribed in accordance with UHSussex policy, including parenteral administration
  • Ensures safe practice with regard to moving and handling, SHARPS and adheres to trust infection prevention policies including Personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Provides accurate documentation of patient care in accordance withUHSussex and national policies.
