In line with NHS England's vision for improving adult gender dysphoria services through increased capacity and patient choice, Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (SPFT) is working with a number of key partners to establish the Sussex Gender Service Pilot (the pilot).

The pilot will provide a new regional service for the provision of gender services, in line with the national service specification for gender identity services for adults. The new service will deliver additional, local specialised gender service capacity in Sussex for adults registered with a GP in Sussex and already on a Gender Dysphoria Clinic (GDC) waiting list. It will also look to provide outreach support for patients, ensuring their needs are met at all stages of their gender dysphoria assessment and treatment journey including whilst they are waiting to access the service.

The number of people in Sussex currently waiting for these services is incredibly high, and the new provision aims to significantly reduce waiting times.

The pilot will be led by SPFT in partnership with the Nottingham Centre for Transgender Healthcare (NCTH), one of the seven established GDCs operating across England. It will work closely with primary care and community & voluntary sector organisations to both design and deliver the service prioritising patient experience and choice.

The pilot will launch in autumn 2023 and SPFT is now looking to recruit to a number of key clinical and non-clinical roles within the service.

Main duties of the job

A principal SLT role with excellent clinical and leadership skills with a good track record of service development and quality improvement, requiring clinical expertise in the specialist field of gender. This post will provide highly specialist clinical input into the new Sussex Gender Service pilot, developing and providing a service which is personally authentic to those referred and facilitating groups based on national best evidence. The post holder will be working at the B or C levels of the RCSLT competency framework for trans and gender-diverse voice and communication therapy. The postholder will be a core member of the new multidisciplinary team consisting of specialist GPs, nurses, psychologists and an endocrinologist, working closely alongside operational staff, and a trans, non-binary and intersex (TNBI) community outreach function.

Applications are particularly welcomed from Trans, Non-Binary and Intersex (TNBI) community members.

You would be joining a team of 30 + SLTs working across a variety of service areas . We meet regularly for CPD events and have excellent links with the RCSLT, priding ourselves in our innovative practice across client groups.

About us

The Sussex Gender Service pilot will be the fifth adult gender service pilot commissioned by NHS England. You will be joining a supportive, creative and positive multi-disciplinary team, dedicated to providing high-quality, patient centred, primary & community care led gender dysphoria services. This is an exciting opportunity to develop and deliver a new service and to make a positive difference to the lives of the local trans, non-binary and intersex (TNBI) community.
