Job summary

The post-holder's duties will be primarily at the John Radcliffe Hospital site within the Children's Hospital and West Wing but their presence may from time to time be required in other parts of the Trust.

Opportunities for teaching, training and research will be available within the fellowship programme and will be agreed by the Lead for Paediatric Anaesthesia Training with the post holder prior to commencement of the fellowship.

Main duties of the job

The Clinical Sessions will be agreed with the clinical lead and will form the basis of the Fellowship job plan. The Fellow will rotate through a modular programme, consisting of four blocks of three months, providing exposure to all of the different paediatric anaesthetic sub-specialties offered in Oxford.

On call is for the Paediatric Anaesthetic Group working with the Paediatric Anaesthetic Consultant on call. The on-call is for emergencies arising at the Children's Hospital and John Radcliffe Hospital across all of the paediatric specialties apart from Cardiothoracic Surgery. The post-holder will work with the resident trainee anaesthetist to cover all paediatric emergency cases and this will require them to liaise with consultants from other on call groups.

The following programme sets out the basic requirements of the fellowship the details to be negotiated and agreed with the post holder prior to commencement of the post.

Person Specification

Qualification and Training

Essential

• FRCA or equivalent.
• Currently employed within a recognized anaesthetic training programme as a senior trainee or on the specialist register in anaesthetics or within 6 months of obtaining the CCT in anaesthetics

Desirable

• Higher Medical Degree

Experience

Essential

• Minimum of 6 months Paediatric Anaesthesia training as Senior trainee
• Evidence of interest in Paediatric Anaesthesia and a desire to acquire the skills and competencies required to become a paediatric anaesthetist.
• Evidence of ability to make decisions and to manage clinical problems commensurate with that of a senior trainee.
• Evidence of undertaking clinical management activities commensurate with that of a senior trainee

Skills and Knowledge

Essential

• Evidence of team leadership skills to be able to undertake effectively, the role of a Fellow within a large, multi site Teaching Hospital
• Organisational skills to be able to undertake effectively, the role of a Fellow within a large multi site Teaching Hospital
• Knowledge of the organisation of the NHS and the Government's agenda for it's modernization with particular attention to Paediatric Anaesthesia
• Management training and experience
• Good personal and interpersonal skills
• Good spoken and written English. Communication skills should be highly developed
• Publications/presentations relevant to paediatric anaesthesia
• Experience of teaching medical, nursing and PAM, undergraduates and postgraduates
• Evidence of audit and clinical governance activities relevant to paediatric anaesthesia

Desirable

• Computing skills: ability to use a word processor, spreadsheet programme and web browser
• Flexible approach to problem solving.
