Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Doctor in Emergency Medicine.

This is an excellent opportunity for doctors wanting to join our enthusiastic and dynamic team in a busy Emergency Department and London Major Trauma Centre.

We are looking for candidates at middle grade level who are at least 5 years post graduation with a minimum 18 months experience in Emergency Medicine.

The post would be suitable for those who want to gain experience in a busy London Teaching hospital prior to entering higher training, those who wish to CESR via the fellowship route or those who want to work long term as middle grades

Main duties of the job

There are plenty of opportunities for career progression and portfolio development. For those wishing to CESR, there is potential for secondments to other specialties such as ITU and for rotation to other local trusts.

We have excellent success every year in postgraduate examinations and in obtaining training posts at both core and higher trainee level.

St George's is one of the only hospitals in the country with 24 hour ED consultant presence on the shop floor. All doctors are extremely well supported with lots of opportunities for teaching and practical experience.

We have consultants with diverse special interests including pre-hospital care, critical care, global health, paediatrics, simulation, ultrasound, research and education.

Successful candidates will have access to a study leave allowance and budget, be allocated educational supervisors and able to attend department teaching and governance. They would be allocated educational development time off the shop floor every week.

St Georges' in located in Tooting, an up and coming area of South West London. It is on the Northern line with excellent access to central London. It has great green spaces, the iconic lido and trendy Tooting market.

Job responsibilities

As well as acute hospital services, we provide a wide variety of specialist care and a full range of community services to patients of all ages. These services are provided from Queen Marys Hospital, Roehampton, 11 health centres and clinics, schools and nurseries, patients' homes and Wandsworth Prison.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Full registration with General Medical Council
  • Minimum of 5 years post qualification (UK or international) including 18months' Emergency Medicine
  • ALS provider ATLS & APLS provider or equivalent *(exceptionally we may accept if booked in the next 6 months)
  • MRCEM or FRCEM primary, int & SJP or equivalent


Desirable

  • ALS/ATLS/APLS/EPLS/ETC instructor
  • Additional experience in relevant SHO posts especially paediatrics and ITU / anaesthetics
  • Experience of working in the NHS or an equivalent healthcare system


Knowledge and skills

Essential

  • Competent in relevant practical procedures e.g. wound management, central line insertion, reduction of dislocations
  • Able to prioritise clinical need, aware of own limitations and knows when to ask for help from seniors or colleagues
  • Understands principles of patient confidentiality and data protection
  • Understands principles of audit


Desirable

  • Computer literate
  • Experience of audit / QIP
  • Publication(s) / oral presentation(s)
