Applications are invited for the post of Clinical Teaching Fellow in Gastroenterology & Simulation. This twelve-month post offers an exciting opportunity for a trainee to develop experience and skills as a Medical Educator. This post is 50% Clinical in nature and 50% Simulation/Education.

By the end of the post, the post holder will have completed the following learning objectives
  • Have run, developed and directed a simulation course
  • Presented at a national or international simulation conference
  • Completed various simulation-based research outputs
  • Developed skills and experience in medical education

    We are also extremely proud of the fact that Homerton Hospital has attained the highest possible rating of \Outstanding from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

    The Simulation Suite was officially opened in 2011. It is equipped with hi-fidelity mannequins including a Laerdel Sim-Man, Sim Junior, Sim-Baby and Sim-NewB. The suite also has laparoscopic, GI-Bronch and ultrasound simulators. The sim team is also exploring the possibilities of technology enhanced learning including Virtual Reality There is a busy calendar of postgraduate and undergraduate courses being run by a diverse multi-disciplinary faculty, including mobile simulation.

    The in-situ simulation programme has been recognised by national bodies as being one of the most advanced in the country. The in situ sim programme was the winner of Homerton patient safety award in 2019.

    Job description

    Job responsibilities

  • Key faculty member hands on delivery and teaching of simulation courses across the trust to the doctors, nurses and allied health professionals
  • Management & Leadership e.g. support department to organise and run regular educational sessions
  • Quality assurance e.g. obtaining and analysing participant and facilitator feedback, writing/publishing significant findings and dissemination of good practice throughout the UK
  • Work closely with the British Society of Gastroenterology & JAG to develop & deliver of JAG approved mandatory Basic Skills in Upper & Lower Endoscopy courses locally
  • Complete simulation based research outputs and present at national and international conferences
  • Support the TPD in delivery of Regional Teaching Programme
  • Work closely with other Homerton Simulation fellows on designated projects.
  • Clinical sessions (2 sessions/1day) at Homerton healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to meet trainees training needs. In addition 3 service clinical sessions (Endoscopy/Clinics). Some of the endoscopy sessions will be flexible to support the backfill of lists.
  • Delivery of In Situ Simulation programme in ACU, General Medical Wards and Endoscopy.
  • Organisation of the departmental education meetings.


  • Person Specification

    Qualifications

    Essential

    • MBBS or equivalent
    • Full registration with a licence to practice from the General Medical Council, or eligible for same
    • Completion of core training examinations (where appropriate)
    • Satisfactory progression through gastroenterology training (ST3+) as demonstrated by satisfactory RITA or ARCP outcomes


    Desirable

    • Prizes or distinctions.
    • Higher qualification or training in Medical education
    • Presentation of work at a national or international meeting.
    • Publications in peer reviewed journals.


    Knowledge and Expertise

    Essential

    • Completion of core training competencies
    • Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching ability
    • Evidence of leadership ability
    • Familiarity with current IT software packages
    • Demonstrated experience in teaching
    • JAG accreditation in Diagnostic Upper GI Endoscopy


    Desirable

    • Team building skills
    • JAG accreditation in Diagnostic Sigmoidoscopy / Colonoscopy


    Simulation

    Essential

    • Experience in facilitation of simulation courses
    • Demonstrated interest in simulation and medical education


    Desirable

    • Train-the Trainers for simulation course or equivalent
    • Evidence of development of educational programmes
