We have a fantastic opportunity to be part of a comprehensive Business Intelligence service in Derbyshire Healthcare NHS FT.

This is a senior role within the team responsible for delivering a high quality provision of information to internal and external stakeholders.

As a Principal Analyst in the Business Intelligence Team you will be expected to undertake complex analysis and interpretation of a wide variety of health information in a fast paced environment.

You will also assist in ensuring that all mandatory submissions are made within the required deadlines to a high standard of quality and provide a responsive service for ad hoc information requests.

As a senior member of the team, you will work with/support/line manage other team analysts in the delivery of a high quality service to the Trust and external stake holders.

You will also contribute to collaborative initiatives across the Information Management, Technology & Patient Records Department and wider organisation.

Please note: there are 2 roles on offer one is permanent and the second is a 24 month fixed term contract.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:
  • Provide an effective information service that converts data into business and commissioning intelligence that informs strategic planning, contract management, and supports service delivery and clinical practice for both the organisation and wider healthcare system.
  • Use technical skills to extract, automate and analyse data for trends in order to support the performance of the Trust.
  • Investigate and resolving complex system and data quality issues.
  • Produce, develop and present of a range of high quality healthcare information.
  • Support/line manage other analysts in the delivery of a high quality service to the Trust and external stake holders.
  • Lead high profile Business Intelligence related projects.
  • Have highly-developed technical skills in SQL, Excel and other Business Intelligence software, eg SSRS/Reporting Services. They will need to be capable of manipulating information as well as the ability to summarise complex information and articulate what it represents.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Contribute fully to the provision of a comprehensive Business Intelligence service in support of the corporate, contractual, clinical and performance management objectives for the Trust.
  • Utilise highly developed technical skills to provide, receive and present complex and statistical information to a variety of audiences (clinical and non-clinical staff).
  • Train, advise and develop other analysts from a technical skill set point of view.
  • Lead on Business Intelligence projects.
  • Utilisespecialist health, system and reporting knowledge ensuring that information is analysed appropriately, is meaningful and is presented to a high standard.
  • Advise, help implement and test system changes and upgrades within the Department.
  • Lead in the benchmarking of Trust services.
  • Actively contributes to Trust data quality with automated solutions.
  • Support the ongoing validity, accuracy and integrity of patient data in the Trusts Data Warehouse, with the objective of ensuring an accurate and timely response to information requirements, both within the organisation and to external agencies.
  • Develop innovative and automated reporting solutions using Business Intelligence software to provide the Trust with greater access to information in a useable format in order to support business processes whilst making the most efficient use of the available technology.
  • Analyse, investigate, resolve and respond to complex Information Management & Technology queries, requests, problems and issues raised relating to reporting systems and processes and make recommendations on preferred options.
  • Help lead on technical areas and maintenance of team software and applications.
  • Assist with the compilation and submission of Commissioning reports and Key Performance Indicators to the highest standards of quality and according to nationally and locally agreed deadlines.
  • Keep abreast of national policies/guidance, Information Management & Technology topics and best practice to assess impact and where relevant propose changes to reporting approaches.

Person Specification

Education / Qualifications


  • Educated to degree level in relevant subject or equivalent level of experience of working at a similar level in specialist area - information / data analysis.
  • Evidence of relevant continued professional development.


  • Higher Degree or advanced certificates in IM& T
  • Project Management Qualifications

Previous Experience


  • Knowledge, experience & expertise in IM& T/data analysis roles
  • Experience of undertaking complex analysis of information from a range of sources.
  • Evidence of developing and using information systems, spreadsheets, and SQL databases, to retrieve and analyse complex data.
  • Evidence of automating tasks in Microsoft Office and business intelligence software, including using validation rules to promote efficient and quality assured work practices.
  • Evidence of leading projects including performance monitoring for example.
  • Evidence of delivering staff training.
  • Evidence of influencing, motivating and negotiating with others to achieve change.


  • Experience and understanding of evaluating and measuring the performance of health services

Other requirements


  • Ability to travel to locations across the Trust and also to national events as required.


  • Current driving licence
