Job summary

This is an opportunity to a join as substantive consultant psychiatrist in mental health care for older persons the well-established and high performing community mental health team for older persons in Newham.

The post has become available due to previous substantive post-holder moving to another Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • To take the overall clinical responsibility for their sector patients and to review patients regularly together with the multi-disciplinary team.
  • To provide comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and medical management of patients, by delivering interventions as specified in the Job Description

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential

  • Fully registered with the General Medical Council
  • On the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT with an endorsement in old age psychiatry
  • Higher training in approved training posts for minimum of 3 years and / or previous consultant training.
  • Membership or Fellowship of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent qualification (in accordance with Royal College of Psychiatrists guidelines)
  • Approval under Section 12(2) of Mental Health Act 1983 and Approved Clinician status


KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Experience of clinical work in General Adult Psychiatry at ST4-6 or Consultant level within the last 3 years
  • Excellent working knowledge and experience of the application of the Mental Health Act
  • Appreciation and understanding of ethnic minority issues and a commitment to developing culturally sensitive practices
  • Understanding of social factors relevant to psychiatry
  • Experience of working on an inpatient ward


Desirable

  • Experience of service development and introducing new services in mental health
  • Knowledge & experience of recovery-informed service delivery and working with patients as experts by experience
  • Inpatient experience at consultant level

  • Leadership skills

RESEARCH AND AUDIT

  • Experience of research work, especially in general hospital patients and / or patients with medically unexplained symptoms

  • Publications in peer-reviewed journals in relevant academic fields
