We are looking for a highly motivated, hardworking and enthusiastic nurse to assist in the delivery of a high-quality clinical research with expertise in diabetes and in particular Type 1 diabetes and technology, in accordance with ICH-GCP guidelines for the conduct of clinical research trials. The post holder will always act in accordance with the NMC Codes of Conduct and Practice, Scope for Professional Practice and all NMC guidelines.

The post holder will provide the highest standards of patient care in line with research protocols and will ensure that such research safeguards the well-being of the patients and non-patients participants and is conducted within ICH Good Clinical Practice guidelines for research.

To work alongside Principal Investigators and the research team to assist in the delivery of high-quality research, professional advice, support, guidance and education to the multi-professional team, patients and carers within the research service. Training in research will be provided.

Main duties of the job

Managing the delivery of the clinical research portfolio within the LDC UHL on the LGH site, working closely with the senior research nurse manager, individual Principal Investigators to ensure successful delivery to time and target. This will involve working closely with the R& I finance to have oversight of the financial management of multiple funding streams including the commercial management of all aspects of income generation related to commercially funded research.

Responsible for determination of the feasibility of multi-specialty adultresearch trials in the LDC/PRC, demonstrating a significant level ofjudgement to gauge the level of risk associated with individual projects.

Researching, developing, implementing and assuring business andstrategic plans for the LDC/ PRC commercial and non-commercialresearch to ensure the long-term sustainability of the LDC/ PRC researchteam.

Providing professional accountability for the planning, management, adjustment and delivery of a high number and broad range of complex research projects, involving multiple agencies and specialities, individuals and activities, to tight deadlines and operating under strict operational protocols.

Providing strong and visible leadership to research staff and others by acting as a role model for others.

Job responsibilities

This is a full-time post, based at Leicester General Hospital. Travel may be required between sites within the Trust and to Primary Care locations within Leicestershire to support departmental activities and there will be a requirement for early/late shifts and weekend work.

The successful candidate will have at least two years post-registration experience, demonstrate competency in clinical skills in the speciality of diabetes with a passionate interest in Type 1 diabetes and the emerging evidence base for technology and treatments. The post holder must have the ability to manage their own time and prioritise their own workload. The post requires flexibility and the ability to work under pressure whilst maintaining accuracy and attention to detail. Basic understanding of research design and methodology is desirable.

The LDC is one of the largest facilities in Europe for conducting first class clinical research in diabetes and other long terms health conditions. The PRC is one of five centres in the UK, dedicated to setting up and delivering late phase commercial clinical trials in the NHS at pace and scale. PRC Leics is hosted by the University Hospitals of Leics NHS Trust and based at Leics General Hospital. By attracting more commercial research to the UK, we increase opportunities for NHS patients to access cutting edge treatment and therapies that are not yet widely available through the NHS. We work across the region, through our partners and stakeholders, to ensure as many people as possible are given an opportunity to take part in research.

Most notably the post holder will work closely with the nationally and internationally renowned Prof Pratik Choudhary who is Professor and Honorary consultant in Diabetes with a special interest in type 1 diabetes and technology. He has active clinical and research programs around education, psychology and technology in type 1 diabetes. In particular, his research uses neuroimaging to explore the mechanisms of hypoglycaemia unawareness, and the use of different strategies such as technology and behavioural interventions to restore awareness.

He is currently chair of the Diabetes Technology Network-UK, working to improve access to technology for diabetes through training, education and advocacy. He is also medical advisor to the Department of Transport, associate editor for Diabetic Medicine, Midlands Type 1 Diabetes Clinical Lead and member of the EASD Post Graduate education committee.

  • Previous experience at band 7 or equivalent. Minimum 2 years in Diabetes speciality

  • Experience of teaching staff and patients with a particular focus in Type 1 diabetes and technology
  • Experience of service development and change management
