Job summary

A Digital First approach in healthcare has never been so important in transforming the NHS. We are seeking enthusiastic, and resilient Project Manager or individual willing to train to join the IM&T Project Team based at University Hospitals Plymouth.

This is an exciting time and will be involved with delivering multiple high-quality projects as part of a complex programme Clinical and Business Digital Solutions throughout the Plymouth Health Community. .

This is not a technical role, so a high degree of technical knowledge is not required, but a basic professional understanding of IT services and infrastructure will be preferred. The role will see you bridging the gap between the highly technical, non-technical and clinical staff, so the ability to understand requirements and articulate them between the project team will be highly beneficial. As our systems are becoming increasingly clinical, we are keen to consider applications from a wide range of backgrounds.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification.***

Main duties of the job

We will be delivering change in busy and demanding environments; you will need to be able lead project teams and customers through the full project lifecycle. You will also need to be comfortable communicating with a range of people from clinical care experts to senior managers/ directors throughout the Public and Private Health Sector. An outgoing and affable personality and strong emotional intelligence skills will be highly beneficial.

We will require you to be highly organised and methodical, have a keen eye for detail with the self-confidence to be open/ honest with all co-workers around plans and project delivery. The ability to gain and maintain respect and credibility from peers and end-users is essential, alongside an understanding of core IT deliverables.

Our current processes are based on PRINCE2 so an understanding of towards this would be advantageous. Key for us is the ability to plan, manage risks and resources and deliver in an ever-changing environment. We are also keen to hear from those with demonstrable experience of Agile project methodologies

Demonstrable experience of working within a healthcare environment or within the public sector is advantageous, but a willingness to learn the challenges and respond to the pressures within this dynamic industry is a must have.

Job responsibilities

Key Dimensions:
  • Manages and delivers a variety of projects across the Trusts
  • Manages co-ordinates and motivates a multi-disciplinary project team of 3 35 staff.
  • Manages the delivery of complex projects and project stages with conflicting and competing pressures on the workload and the team, including dealing with the mixed expectations of customers
  • Deals with cultural change, presenting positively the benefits and risks to the customers.
  • Creates and develops solutions to complex problems within confined budgetary constraints and to an agreed schedule.
  • Manages and employs meticulous planning skills to manage the scope of projects in a fast-changing health environment including clinicians, nursing staff, support staff, voluntary workers, suppliers, IT experts, and contractors
  • Line manages Band 6 Project Managers, Apprentice Project Managers and/or Band 5 Assistant Project Managers as required, including mentoring, training, and coaching, ensuring they have the required knowledge, skills, and competencies to undertake their duties
  • Ensures that the products delivered meet specified quality standards and that negotiated purchase contracts with suppliers and appropriate service level agreements are in place.
  • Ensures effective communication of results, variances and problems to the project Resource Manager and to stakeholders, offering solutions and options when problems arise.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience in managing, leading and developing a project management team.
  • Proven successful structured project management skills and demonstrable experience in a leadership position
  • Substantial relevant demonstrable experience in health service or other major large-scale customer-service oriented organisation.


Qualifications

Essential

  • Proven knowledge of specific area, acquired through degree in a relevant field or equivalent demonstrable experience or training, plus further proven staff and project management knowledge to post graduate diploma level equivalent
  • Prince 2 Practitioner (with current registration) or willingness to achieve in next 6 months if expired.
  • Specialist proven knowledge across range of procedures, underpinned by theory
  • Supervisor, Management or Leadership Qualification or demonstrable work-based experience & proven knowledge


Aptitude and Abilities

Essential

  • Excellent verbal, including strong presentation skills, written and interpersonal skills.
  • Able to provide and receive highly complex, sensitive or contentious information
  • Ability to present complex, sensitive or contentious information to large groups
