Job summary
Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust CONSULTANT IN ADULT PSYCHIATRY Response HubHMR- 10PAsPennine Care NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a full-time substantive Consultant Psychiatrist. This post is based in Rochdale.
This is a new post, providing medical input to the Referral Management Team, which is currently expanding due to the availability of local transformation funds. The role is to support colleagues working in the team in the assessment, initial management, referral and signposting of patients referred from primary care. This will include consultation, supervision and education of other non-medical members of the team, and also direct assessment of patients who may be more complex or who are most likely to benefit from medical expertise.
The Referral management team provides a single point of entry into mental health services. They screen and triage referrals and follow people up following assessment to stabilise them ready for psychological intervention or do assessment for referral into secondary care services.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will see, or be consulted regarding, patients with a broad range of mental health needs who present to the Referral management team. These will include patients for whom primary care providers require diagnostic clarification or guidance on management, and also those who may require secondary mental health services due to the nature of their condition or concern about risk. These assessment appointments will mainly be carried out in outpatient clinics (primarily at Birch Hill Hospital) but will occasionally involve domiciliary visits, and arrangements may be made to run clinics at other sites within the borough (such as other Pennine Care sites or GP practices). There will also be a role in providing medication and management advice to local GPs for patients whose needs are likely to be met within primary care.
The successful applicant will develop working relationships with local primary care providers, including GPs and primary care psychological therapy services. As this is a new post there are opportunities for innovation in terms of ways of approaching this, but it is envisaged that it may involve approximately half a session per week providing telephone advice to GPs. There will also be a need to maintain relationships with local secondary mental health colleagues within the trust, to whom patients will be referred when appropriate.
