The Isle of Wight Chronic Pain Service is seeking applications from highly motivated individuals to work within the service offering high quality, patient centred care to the island population.

You will provide both individual and group based psychological therapies to individuals with complex pain, making a significant difference to the quality of life and wellbeing of these individuals.

This role is offered on either a part time or full time basis.

Main duties of the job

The chronic pain service is a small, busy, friendly & cohesive department with good clinical outcomes well regarded by the local population. The team has recently undertaken a restructuring exercise and is aiming to increase the psychology and movement based services offered those with intractable pain on the island and so are looking to increase our staffing within these disciplines

Under the supervision of the 8a Psychologist to provide high quality clinical care to patients of the Chronic pain service.

This will include participating in both multidisciplinary assessments and individual psychological assessments. The post holder will hold an individual caseload as well as contributing to the development and delivery of group-based pain management interventions.

You will form part of the multidisciplinary team and will provide advice and consultation on psychological aspects of pain management to both patients and other clinicians.

The post involves taking an active part in audit, research and development of the service as well as contributing to development and training.

As a psychologist within the chronic pain team you will be linked with the wider psychological services on the Island joining a dynamic and expanding team

Person Specification

Qualifications and role specific knowledge

Essential

• Doctoral level training in Clinical/ counselling/ health psychology or equivalent as accredited by the BPS
• Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) - or will be at the end of training
• Experience working with a wide variety of client groups, and presenting with the full range of clinical severity including inpatient, outpatient and community settings.
• Experience of psychological work with individuals with health problems.
• Maintain a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing consultations
• Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management.

Aptitudes

Essential

• Well developed communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Conveying highly complex information to clients, their families, carers and other health professionals.
• An understanding of the needs and difficulties of people with physical health problems.

Abilities

Essential

• Knowledge of the theory and practice of psychology
• Understanding of contemporary models of chronic pain.

Communication Skills

• Commitment to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training
