We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated doctor, who is committed to excellence in Clinical breast work to join our dynamic team. This post will be for a fixed term period of 12 months in the first instance, to help carry out surgical procedures and breast clinics at Queen Alexandra Hospital. There areadditional opportunities for the successful candidate to be involved with the surgical management of thyroid disease and skin cancer, if desired.

The breast unit carries out both screening and symptomatic assessments, treating about 700 cancers annually and is an ABS/BAPRAS accredited National Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Training Centre.

Participation in the on call rota is not required.

Main duties of the job

This replacement post exists to help provide clinical care for patients as well as providing opportunities to be involved with research and quality improvement projects within the department. The duties will consist of out-patient clinics, theatre work and contribution in the MDT meetings. Opportunities to get involved in research, audit, and innovation projects will be provided with close consultant supervision. There is no on call required. Experience in breast clinical work is desirable but additional on-going training will be provided if required. Education and training within the department is strongly encouraged.

Job responsibilities

Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust Breast Unit is one of the largest in the UK treating approximately 700 women newly diagnosed with breast cancer each year and is a recognised Breast Screening Centre and accredited National Oncoplastic and Reconstructive Training Centre. The majority of cancers are diagnosed following symptomatic referral via their GP. The unit receives over 7000 new referrals yearly.

The Multi-Disciplinary Breast Team consists of all the above staff plus Consultants in Radiology, Pathology, Medical Oncology, Clinical Oncology, Nuclear Medicine and Plastic Surgery. The Unit also has seven Breast Care Nurses, Metastatic Breast Care Nurse, MDT Co-ordinator, Research Trials Co-ordinator, Data Collection Officer, Radiographers specialising in mammography, Lymphoedema Nurses and Counsellors. There are currently six diagnostic breast clinics every week. Ultrasound guided core biopsies, as well as stereotactic mammography equipment is all available and digital specimen x-ray facility is available in the breast theatre. Breast MRI is also available on site. The Portsmouth Breast Unit is one of the leading Centres in the Country on oncoplastic training and techniques. It is well supported by a team of plastic surgeons. It is one of 15 nationally accredited Oncoplastic Training Centres in the UK.

The unit also includes a specialist surgical oncology service which covers melanoma, soft tissue, sarcoma and other skin cancers. Surgery includes sentinel node biopsies, wide local excision, grafts and local/free flaps. It works in close collaboration with the Dermatology and Plastic surgery departments. Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust hosts the specialist skin MDT with teleconferencing with other NHS Trusts in the clinical network.

The Trust has a reputation for award-winning research and development and last year was awarded university hospital status. Over the past year, PHU teams have recruited 8,713 participants into clinical trials and this effort led to PHU being ranked the top recruiting Trust from 42 other large acute trusts, with over 170 open studies. The breast department participates in national trials and has strong academic links, with multiple active research and innovation project opportunities and support from the Portsmouth Technology Trials Unit, The SIGHT Programme and the Research Group in Breast Health - University of Portsmouth.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

  • Higher professional training in General Surgery at ST3+ level.
  • Experience of working within the NHS.


Desirable

  • Higher professional training in Breast Surgery.


Qualifications

Essential

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
  • MBBS or equivalent.
  • MRCS or equivalent.


Desirable

  • PLAB.
  • ATLS.
  • BSS.
