An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, adaptable, focused and enthusiastic HCPC registered Band 6 BMS in our Clinical Biochemistry department at the William Harvey Hospital, East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust (EKHUFT). You will be part of a dynamic, and critical frontline team that provides specialist and acute services 24-7 365 to the patients of East Kent.

Main duties of the job

To undertake scientific tasks within a section of the departments as delegated by the senior staff, including when appropriate, monitoring the performance and supervision of trainee Biomedical Scientists and (S)AHCS staff.

The postholder will be required to undertake routine analytical work in all sections of the laboratory, involving both automated and manual techniques, sign out results and contribute generally to the delivery of the service.

The postholder will be required to make timely and accurate decisions regarding the efficient and safe functioning of the Clinical Biochemistry laboratory considering Health and Safety and other relevant legislation whilst recognising when to seek advice from more senior staff.

The postholder will be to expected to follow standard operating procedures within the department to enable the service to run effectively.

You will be expected to undertake training to achieve a level of competency which will enable you to work independently which includes Continuous Processing Pattern (CPP) 24/7 working.

The postholder will be expected to use initiative in all areas of work.

Person Specification

Qualifications and training

Essential

  • State Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Biomedical Science Degree or equivalent Post Graduate Diploma
  • Completion of specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry or equivalent qualification. e.g. MSc in appropriate subject
  • Applicants who can evidence that they are 3 months to completion of their Specialist portfolio will be considered


Desirable

  • IBMS Membership
  • Evidence of CPD


Skills and experience

Essential

  • Minimum of 2 years' experience of working in a busy ISO 15189 accredited clinical biochemistry laboratory
  • Able to demonstrate competency in appropriate biochemistry laboratory techniques.
  • Experience in working night shifts in an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory.


Desirable

  • 3 years post registration experience
  • Experience across all areas of clinical biochemistry.


Knowledge

Essential

  • Knowledge of advances in Clinical Biochemistry in an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory
  • Knowledge/Experience of CAPA and Audits.


Desirable

  • Knowledge of conventional IT software e.g. Apex LIMS
