An opportunity has arisen for a Consultant to join CNWL Health & Justice Services.

The applicant will be a Consultant who is passionate about prison psychiatry and can deliver outstanding clinical leadership to the mental health team.

This Post is ideally suited for a Consultant who enjoys assessing and treating challenging and unusual mental and physical health clinical presentations in a complex long-term environment.

Based at the Gordon Hospital in Central London, CNWL's Health & Justice Service provides comprehensive and innovative primary care and secondary mental health services in prison and secure settings within London and the South East of England, and Forensic Services within the Trust catchment area, including secure inpatient, community forensic, liaison and diversion and police custody.

Our clinical model is underpinned by health promotion and addressing health inequality, and designed to address unmet health needs and achieve health gain through effective primary care, active treatment of mental illness and enhanced chronic disease management. The Post Holder will work with H& J clinical colleagues to improve the personal health and well-being of the people we help, in doing so reduce the likelihood of their re-offending and avoid their over-containment in secure settings. The Post Holder will be expected to participate in clinical governance including service development and quality improvement.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting role working with a complex group of prisoners to deliver innovative new approaches to treatment in prison psychiatry. This includes general outpatient services, an inpatient unit, provision to the CSC, ADHD Clinic and anewly developed Stabilisation, Progress and Recovery program (SPaR). This innovative service which has funding from both NHS and the OPD pathway has a strong focus on formulation driven interventions and supports the most complex men within the prison.The Post Holder will manage complex clinical presentations in the Healthcare Unit and provide outpatient psychiatric care for prisoners in ordinary location.

The Post Holder will be a member of the Consultant body in Health & Justices who work across a variety of criminal justice and health settings. The Consultant workforce actively contribute to quality improvement, research and academic activities, who regularly meet to discuss clinical and professional priorities.

The Post Holder will work in a MDT setting, there is a junior doctor in the Team, and a GP is available most days. The Postholder will run outpatient clinics for sever mental disorders, attend ACCT reviews as required and attend the Team Meeting to provide specialist advice and input. The Postholder will work closely with the GP to manage the interface between primary and secondary care. The Postholder will receive regular supervision from the Clinical Director.

Job responsibilities

The new postholder will be a dynamic, enthusiastic and motivated Consultant to join the mental health team at HMP Woodhill, a Category B prison situated in Milton Keynes with a Category A function for both young offenders and those in the Close Supervision Centre (CSC).

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • MRCPsych OR MRCPsych equivalent approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists.
  • Additional clinical qualifications.
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment. Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
  • Approved clinician status OR able to achieve within 3 months of appointment Approved under S12 OR able to achieve with 3 months of appointment
  • Holds and will use valid UK driving licence OR provides evidence of proposed alternative
  • Excellent knowledge in specialty
  • Excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho- social perspective and wide medical knowledge
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA
  • Participated in continuous professional development
  • Participated in research or service evaluation
  • Has actively participated in clinical audit


Desirable

  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • Additional clinical qualifications.
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service
  • Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement: awards, prizes, presentations and publications.
  • Has led clinical audits leading to service change.
