Job summary

Come and join our Psychology team and be part of shaping psychological provision across the older peoples community service. We are a supportive team that values innovation, fosters development and is passionate about the care of older people and their families.

We are looking for a qualified Clinical Psychologist to join our team providing high quality community services to older people within Surrey Heath. We work with those over 65-years who are faced with mental health and/or memory problems.

Our Psychology department recognise the importance of support for team members, have regular CPD sessions, and externally provided skills workshops (e.g. CAT, CFT). There is access to specialist neuropsychology supervision monthly in addition to regular clinical supervision, and management supervision. Our Trust is a pilot site for the Transformation agenda opening up further opportunities to train and develop skills allied to expanding and developing services and specialisms. Our department has expanded rapidly in the past few years allowing for further opportunities to take forward clinician interests, with strong links to local training courses and we value the contribution of our Psychologists in Training.

We offer a comprehensive induction programme, with regular supervision and a good peer support network. We value the contribution of our team and are able to offer some flexibility of working around service need, including both remote and in-person aspects of working.

Main duties of the job

This exciting role will involve working with a degree of autonomy alongside providing the opportunity to develop both your therapy and neuropsychology skills. You will conduct detailed assessment and formulation, therapeutic intervention and neuropsychological assessments, covering both functional and organic problems for people living in the local community.

You will be working collaboratively with members of a well-established multi-disciplinary team, where psychology is highly valued in the team. A key part of this role will be using clinical leadership skills to influence teams in embedding psychosocial approaches within everyday practice. You will also be supporting and supervising other team members.

There will be opportunities to lead on quality improvement projects and to contribute to the development of psychology provision across older peoples services. We support the undertaking of leadership and supervisor training to enable you to develop your skills and progress in your role.

Job responsibilities

My job makes better lives by promoting health and independence for people who use our services and their carers/support staff by delivering high quality psychology assessments, formulation, interventions and consultation and providing supervision and guidance to assistant psychologists and others as required.

To be professionally and legally responsible and accountable for all aspects of clinical work and care. To maintain high standards of care in all areas of practice in accordance with the HCPC Code of Conduct, professional guidelines and Trust Policies and Procedures. To act within the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act (2005). To be aware of and implement Safeguarding Adult and Child Protection Policies, Procedures and legislation.

To carry out comprehensive psychological and cognitive assessments and formulation, plan implement and evaluate delivery of psychology interventions and consultations to support people with specific needs.

To actively involve people in developing and agreeing their own care plan, to act as an advocate and ensure that there is proper regard for their dignity, choice, self-esteem, racial, cultural, sexual and religious needs and preferences.

To work creatively to adapt verbal and written communication to meet the needs of people who use our services

To undertake comprehensive risk assessments and develop effective risk management plans.

To establish and maintain effective partnerships and relationships with colleagues, other agencies, people who use services and their carers and support staff.

To contribute to conducting clinical audit, quality assurance and research, maintaining current knowledge of research findings and development within specific care group

To contribute to developing and providing a range of specialist teaching/training packages which can be delivered to a range of multi-disciplinary audiences.

To positively contribute to divisional and team developments in relation to all aspects of psychology practice.

To contribute to the supervision and Individual Performance Review/Appraisal of assistant psychologists as required.

To contribute to the development and implementation of appropriate policies, protocols and care pathways.

To contribute to initiatives to ensure that the diverse needs of people within the care group are addressed within local services and future developments.

To practice within a Positive Behaviour Support and trauma informed care framework.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Doctorate in Clinical or Counselling Psychology qualification or equivalent


Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working with people from across the life span with a range of mental health issues and cognitive profiles.
  • Experience across a range of psychological models including systemic, behavioural and individual therapeutic.
  • Experience of working with older people within a positive behaviour support framework.
  • 6 months experience of working with older people with mental health difficulties and/or dementia (can be pre-qualification).


Desirable

  • Up-to-date knowledge of key policies and guidelines for older people & dementia care.
