This is an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated, innovative individual, who is passionate about Bladder, Bowel and Pelvic Health care and is able to demonstrate strong clinical leadership skills to deliver excellent team work and clinical outcomes for patients.

As an integral part of the specialist services team you will be expected to demonstrate exceptionally diverse communication skills. Have the professional competence to make informed clinical decisions regarding management of care and pathways to ensure effective patient journeys and improvement clinical outcomes and quality of life.

Main duties of the job

The Women's Health Physiotherapist within the Bladder/Bowel and pelvic health Team, assisting in supporting the team in providing a high quality continence service to patients served by Surrey Downs Health Care Trust (SDHC). The post holder will use their skills to organise, deliver and develop high quality, evidence-based continence care across a variety of settings, including clinics, community hospitals, patient homes and care homes. The role will ensure that quality standards for patients with mild, moderate and complex bladder and/or bowel problems who require specialist holistic assessment and treatment are met within this developing service. The post holder will ensure the delivery of educational programmes to healthand social care colleagues, patients and carers. They will also maintain a close working relationship with colleagues in the acute and community trust, working with the Lead Nurse for Continence from the Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS trust and will support interactive working. The post holder will lead in audits and research to measure clinical effectiveness and user satisfaction.

Job responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities Clinical
  • To undertake womens health physiotherapy/continence clinics and classes as required.
  • To perform advanced physiotherapeutic/continence assessment of patients with pelvic floor dysfunction and/or bladder/bowel symptoms; use advanced clinical reasoning skills and manual assessment techniques to provide anaccurate diagnosis of their condition.
  • To formulate and deliver an individual physiotherapy/continence treatment programmes based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and treatment options. Including advanced pelvic floor physiotherapy, biofeedback and electrostimulation.
  • To develop management plans based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice for patients where treatment is not effective.
  • To assess patient understanding of treatment proposals and gain valid informal consent to treatment.
  • To use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication tools to communicate effectively and sensitively condition related information with patients, doctors and other members of the multidisciplinary team. This will include patients whomay be dysphasic, depressed, deaf, blind or who may be unable to accept the diagnosis.
  • To evaluate patient progress, reassess, alter treatment programmes and refer on to other health care professionals if required.
  • To participate in the development of integrated continence services and promote awareness of continence care amongst colleagues in acute and primary care services.
  • To manage clinical risk within own patient caseload seeking guidance from team members as appropriate.
  • Work within clinical guidelines and to have a good working knowledge of national and local standards. Monitor own and others quality of practice as appropriate.
  • To make accurate and complete records of work undertaken and keep monthly statistics in line with CSP, continence and physiotherapy department standards.
  • To be professionally and legally accountable for all aspects of your own professional and clinical work.
  • To participate in the development and delivery of Bowel, Bladder and Pelvic Health Service formal and informal training programmes as required.
  • To contribute to development of patient care by attending relevant team, departmental or other appropriate meetings and comment on recommended changes to clinical care or service provision.

Professional
  • To maintain own clinical professional development (CPD) by keeping abreast of new developments and trends and incorporate them as necessary into your work.
  • To actively participate in in-service training programme by attending and contributing to discussions and presentations including modelling for practical sessions.
  • Participate in Epsom and St Helier appraisal process.
  • To be responsible for teaching student physiotherapists to graduate level on physiotherapeutic skills and knowledge within core clinical areas.
  • To participate in data collection and lead clinical audit as required within the continence service/physiotherapy department or as part of the MDT.
  • Maintain and develop current knowledge of evidence based practice in womens health/continence care, developing specialist knowledge.

Organisational
  • To be responsible for equipment used in carrying out physiotherapy/continence duties and to adhere to departmental policies andguidelines to ensure safe use of equipment. To report any defects or difficulties to clinical manager.
  • To share responsibility for departmental tidiness, maintenance andadministration.
  • Utilize IT systems appropriately to improve the efficiency of the service.
  • To assist in the supervision and co-ordination of junior staff and assistants on a daily basis ensuring their practice as well as your own meets the required professional standards.

General Responsibilities
  • To attend statutory and mandatory training in line with Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust.
  • To maintain complete confidentiality of all patient and staff information known or acquired during the course of work. To not release such information to anyone else other than in an official capacity.
  • To adhere to all policies and procedures of the continence department of Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust.
  • To undertake any other duties or responsibilities commensurate with the grade as requested by clinical manager.


Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Diploma/Degree in physiotherapy
  • HPC Registration
  • Evidence of CPD including attendance at relevant post graduate training in women's health Portfolio and evidence of information learning


Desirable

  • Member of Chartered Society of Physiotherapy
  • Member of relevant special interest group e.g. ACPWH


Experience

Essential

  • Experience as a junior in a broad rotational post having gained a range of experience in orthopaedics, inpatients, respiratory care, rehabilitation, neurological and musculoskeletal conditions
  • Working knowledge of broad range of women's health/musculo-skeletal/older people conditions
  • Experience of working as part of a physiotherapy and/or multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledge and experience of safeguarding policies, practices and procedures


Desirable

  • Experience of working with complex conditions e.g. pelvic pain, pelvic floor rehabilitation Knowledge of the workings of other interlinking services e.g. community, urology, colorectal, social care
  • Experience of physiotherapy assistant or student supervision
  • Involvement in audit, research and understanding of quality issues
