Job summary

Sussex Partnership's data strategy is a forward-looking step towards increasing our use of data to best benefit patients, our staff and our communities. As part of this strategy we are increasing our capacity for professional data science within our team. The successful applicant will have extensive specialist knowledge in an area of statistics /information analysis, which they are looking to apply within the field of healthcare.

Data are generated from a range of clinical and non-clinical systems. This role will provide a blend of direct technical work e.g. answer direct queries and performing investigative analysis as well as leading the development of the Trust approach to data science. This will include developing standards for best practice within the organisation to ensure data science is optimised as a core tool in the development of new services / operational approaches to enhance treatment and improve outcomes for patients.

The post holder will apply expertise of coding and analytical languages e.g. MS SQL Server, T-SQL, Python, R, and be willing and able to expand their knowledge in this area.

The post holder will work closely with the data science community across the region and beyond to ensure development of the data science service capitalizes on emerging new technologies and methodologies to the benefit of patients and staff. This work to include an active role in the development of system (ICS/Regional) data use.

Main duties of the job

  • Maintain oversight of the design of analytical and investigative analysis of Trust and ICB datasets following best practice standards and taking advantage of emerging techniques and technologies e.g. Python, R, Trusted Research Environments.
  • To provide statistical and analytics expertise to make judgements on best techniques to apply to analytical investigation,
  • To participate in wider health system development in the use of data and analytics to support improvements to patient care, population health and to the efficiency of health service delivery.
  • Supports the Data Modelling and Reporting lead in the development of data structures required to support effective analysis and visualisation.
  • Takes a leading role in the continuing development and support of Sussex Partnership's expanded data science function as part of the wider development of the Trust Learning Health System.
  • Leads in the development of best practice standards for the Trust data science function. Supports the development of relevant analytical skills within the team e.g. predictive and prescriptive analytical techniques and coding language skills.
  • Develops and delivers formal presentations conveying complex technical concepts and related findings to colleagues across the organization ensuring their clear understanding of insights from the data.

Communication & Relationship skills

Provides and receives highly complex information relating to analysis and reporting of clinical and non-clinical data to both technical and non-technical professionals.

Communicates information clearly, tactfully and at the appropriate level of complexity for the intended audience. You turn complex data analyses into clear and compelling messages. You give tactical and strategic recommendations that influence audiences.

Develops and delivers formal, technical presentations to colleagues.

Participates in the prioritization of work concerning system design and development to support effective analysis and reporting processes with non-IM&T managers.

Knowledge, Training and experience

Highly developed specialist knowledge of statistical techniques and information management standards acquired through post graduate degree or equivalent experience. Significant workplace experience.

Knowledge and expertise of coding and analytical languages e.g. MS SQL Server, T-SQL, Python, R. Capability to expand knowledge in this area.

Fluent in summary statistics, feature selection data visualization with the ability to use business intelligence development tools e.g. Power BI, tableau to communicate analytical evidence to non-specialist audiences.

Fluent in at least one predictive or prescriptive analytical technique e.g. regression modelling, machine learning and discrete event simulation including developing algorithms in a secure platform.

Adept at experimental and quasi-experimental studies and able to make strategic recommendation based on evaluation including cost effectiveness. Able to develop code at pace to demonstrate business value.

Analytical & Judgement Skills

Analyses and investigates highly complex operational and clinical queries and offers a range of solutions, comparing relevant costs and benefits. Uses specialist knowledge to help develop understanding of issues or problems which are impacting on operational or clinical service delivery.

Plays a leading role in moving the organisation towards a learning health system approach.

Works as part of business intelligence team to develop the appropriate design of data structures to support effective analytics and insight development, both within the organisation and outside as part of the development of the Trust as a Data Centre of Excellence for the region.

Uses expertise to make judgements on which statistical / information analytical techniques are appropriate, including those for the improved utility of datasets where challenges such as data quality are factors.

Develops standards for the delivery of data science at the trust and guides more junior staff as necessary.

Planning & Organisational Skills

You can effectively formulate problems, oversee data management, communicate analytical results and oversee project management from inception through to completion.

You demonstrate some skills in leadership, coaching and decision quality. You promote open source research-based proof of concepts to add value obtained from data.

Willingness to develop leadership capabilities.

Advanced keyboard skills / inputting and manipulating data, information into computer databases.

Person Specification



  • Degree level or equivalent qualification / previous professional experience
  • Other training and experience in a workplace setting (see below)



  • Significant experience in the application of database query and report writing tools such as SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) and MS Access in report production and presentation
  • Experience of complex data analysis and data comparison.
  • Significant experience of analytical coding language e.g. MS SQL Server, T-SQL, python, R
  • Experience applying advanced statistical methods and techniques
