Job summary

The advertised post is suitable for individuals who are interested in furthering their knowledge, skills, and experience in emergency medicine, whilst working in a stimulating yet supportive environment. The posts have been designed for individuals who are interested in building on any experience already gained at middle grade level in Emergency Medicine.

Successful applicants would join the emergency department team in the Emergency Care Centre. The successful candidates will contribute to the middle grade rota. The posts will be spilt 80% clinical and 20% ultrasound, with flexibility at the time of job planning.

The trust will fund the successful candidate in a PG Certificate in Medical Ultrasound is at Teesside University and allocate a QE POCUS supervisor and will have weekly scanning time built into their job plans.

'The course gives you ultrasound education, skills and training, from the principles and practice of ultrasound to undertaking cutting edge research in point-of-care (PoCUS) practice and education at a state-of-the-art ultrasound simulation centre in Darlington'.

Main duties of the job

The department sees approximately 90,000 new attendances per annum covering the full spectrum of acute illness and injury that is seen in a busy district general hospital. The department is a designated trauma receiving unit and has established links with the local major trauma centre at the RVI in Newcastle. The emergency medicine consultant body has several areas of specialist interest and specific training could be provided in paediatric emergency medicine, core and enhanced emergency ultrasound, hand surgery, education, and simulation. The department runs a daily review clinic and a weekly paediatric review clinic. The emergency department is responsible for the inpatient care of head and chest injuries. Job responsibilities

The successful candidate will be expected to assess and manage patients presenting to the emergency department with a wide spectrum of emergency presentations, including adult, paediatric, trauma and non-trauma presentations. Service delivery will be on the middle grade rota. The successful candidate will also be expected to supervise and support the more junior medical staff as required and will be involved in the resuscitation of acutely ill and injured patients.

The successful candidate will be expected to use the allocated supporting clinical activities time to engage in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) as well as departmental development activities.

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING

Essential

  • Ability to prioritise workload & use initiative
  • ALS, ATLS (or ETC) and APLS provider status
  • Good communication skills
  • Meet the requirements of the GMC's Good Medical Practice


Desirable

  • ATLS, APLS or ALS instructor


EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Experience in posts recognised for General Professional Training
  • Experience in EM at middle grade level
  • Involvement with audit and teaching


Desirable

  • Relevant experience in specialties allied to EM
  • Involvement in research or simulation


DISPOSITION

Essential

  • Ability to work with and support members of a multidisciplinary team

Essential

  • Ability to fully participate in rota
  • Valid permit status to work/remain in UK


Desirable
