Welcome to Devon Partnership Trust! We would like to invite you to apply for the Specialist Doctor post in Older Peoples Inpatient Mental Health Team working in North Devon.

This is a full time inpatient post for older people inpatient mental health services in North Devon. There is 0.4 WTE Consultant cover for this team. The post holder will work alongside the Consultant Psychiatrist.

The post holder will share clinical leadership with the other senior members of the team and be responsible for the psychiatric assessment and management of patients referred to the service.

Patient safety and Quality Improvement are key aspects of the role and training will be provided if required. Programmed Activities are negotiable for research, teaching, medical management and other special interests.

This post is suitable for Specialty Doctor and Associate Specialists in an existing or post-retirement with a broad level of older adult psychiatric expertise. International candidates are welcome to apply. Experience of working in older peoples inpatient mental health services is preferable but support will be given to doctors wishing to move from other psychiatric specialties or roles.

Approved Clinician status at appointment is preferable but those who would be eligible e.g., doctors applying from abroad, will be supported to obtain this authority.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for the assessment and management of older adult inpatients admitted to the Meadow View ward at North Devon District Hospital, Barnstaple. The post holder will support the Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act.

The majority of the patients on the ward will have a functional rather than an organic illness. However, there may be occasions when it is necessary to admit a patient with dementia to the ward. Patients with dementia and challenging behaviour will generally be admitted to the specialist dementia ward in Exeter.

From time to time a younger adult may be more suitably nursed on Meadow View ward and the post holder will be the Specialist Doctor in charge of their care. The admission of these patients will be negotiated with the post holder or the nursing staff. A reciprocal arrangement for older adults who would not be suitable for Meadow View ward, e.g. are very aggressive, is in place so they can be nursed on a younger adult ward.

A mentor and peer group will be provided. You will have 2 Supporting Programmed Activities (8 hours a week) to support your professional development, attend your monthly peer group, quarterly medical advisory committee, and local post-graduate meetings.
