Job summary


The role of the Childrens Continence Nurse Specialist is to deliver a nurse led continence service for children and young people across South Tyneside and Sunderland.

To achieve and maintain optimal continence through provision and facilitation of investigation and assessment, development of care packages and ongoing support and management throughout treatment programmes.

Provide support, education and training in all aspects of bladder/bowel problems to children, carers and other health care professionals in a variety of community settings.

The post holder will be expected to work across South Tyneside and Sunderland at various clinical sites, including doing home visits to clients homes/residential schools/mainstream schools.

Main duties of the job

To act as an autonomous, registered practitioner who is legally and professionally accountable for own unsupervised actions guided by the professional code of conduct and Trust guidelines and protocols.

To manage a caseload of children and young people who have been referred to the Community Childrens Continence Service (Level 2) that continue to experience night time wetting, daytime wetting and/or constipation/soiling after initial input and review from Universal Services (Level 1).

To be responsible for assessing children and young people with bladder and bowel dysfunction and implement individualised care plans to treat and/or manage the presenting compliant in line with the local and national policies/guidance and pathways.

Job responsibilities

Acts as a source of specialist advice for residents in South Tyneside and Sunderland including their carers with bladder and bowel problems/incontinence, also including healthcare staff/agencies who are part of multi-disciplinary care provision. To work in collaboration with the Clinical Team Manager to provide best practice in accordance with local and national policy and guidelines. To plan and delivery specialist clinical treatment/management/advice in a nurse led community clinic and domiciliary setting. Manage own patient caseload to ensure appropriate and timely service is provided. Provide education and training within primary care including residential and nursing homes.

Skills and Knowledge


  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of NICE Guidance related to continence
  • Evidence of audit and analytical skills
  • Good understanding of the role of clinical nurse specialist in bladder and bowel care practice
  • Motivated, reliable and commitment to team working
  • Able to prioritise and self manage own workload
  • Competent IT user including email, Microsoft Office and clinical systems
  • Flexible worker able to be creative and innovate


  • Experience of budgetary monitoring / control



  • Post registration nursing experience
  • Experience of working in continence care or urology, gynaecology, colorectal nursing
  • Experience of working with staff and service users to improve services


  • Experience of practice development / project work

Physical Skills


  • Able to move and handle safely without causing harm to themselves and others
  • Car Driver able to meet the travel requirements of the role


  • Trained in moving and handling procedures



  • Registered Nurse
  • First degree in Nursing or Health related topic or working towards
  • Able to complete Nurse prescribing qualification and achieve Prescriber status


  • Nurse Prescriber
  • Post registration qualification in continence e.g. ENB 978
  • Nurse prescribing qualification
  • Clinical skills for assessment and treatment related to continence

  • Recognizable teaching / mentorship qualification e.g. Teaching Certificate or working towards
