The Transformation team has a critical role in delivering productivity and efficiency improvements throughout the organisation in line with King's Strategy 2021-26 formed around providing the best, sustainable, patient centred care. The King's transformation agenda aligns to the needs of the Trust through:
  • Specific projects and programmes of work, many of which involve service redesign, cost improvement, use of benchmarking, GIRFT, digital and recovery plans
  • The implementation of continuous improvement methodology so that the team can help the organisation to deliver its BOLD strategy (Brilliant People, Outstanding Care, Leaders in Research Innovation & Education, Diversity Equality & Inclusion at the heart of everything we do), and
  • Providing a shoulder to shoulder approach alongside operational, clinical, nursing, finance, workforce and network colleagues in order to embed sustainable change.

  • This advertisement is for a Transformation Delivery Lead supporting operational productivity improvements across outpatients clinics, operating theatres, and ED and Patient Flow.

    Main duties of the job

    The Transformation Delivery Lead is part of the Transformation and is responsible for effective delivery of assigned projects within one of more Transformation Programmes. The Transformation Delivery Lead will contribute to programme planning, project start-up and delivery, promoting an understanding of the Transformation Programme and championing the professional discipline of project management with King's.

    The Transformation Delivery Lead will be responsible for the full project life cycle and project budget for the duration of time they are allocated to a given project. They may be allocated to more than one project at a time. The key relationships of this role will be with the care group triumvirates (Clinical Director, Head of Nursing and General Manager) and will need to have credibility in order to win the hearts and minds of any change proposed.

    The Transformation Delivery Lead is accountable to the Senior Transformation Delivery Lead & Deputy/Director of Transformation.

    Job responsibilities

    The post holder will be responsible for the day to day management of multiple projects, coordinating and aligning their projects to deliver the Trusts Strategic Transformation objectives. Ability to work autonomously will be key in diagnosing issues as part of root cause analysis and translating this as a team into programmes of work.

    Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Project Management
    • The post holder will be responsible for projects within a Transformation Programme. The projects will be across care groups and organisational boundaries
    • The post holder will be expected to provide expert project management skills and support to the clinical/speciality area.
    • Provide direction to project sponsors, project managers operational managers to guide them through wider Kings governance processes
    • Work on behalf of the Senior Transformation Delivery Lead to ensure alignment of programmes and projects to the overall portfolio and strategic direction
    • Work with the Senior Transformation Delivery Lead to develop, refine and champion project management best practice across Kings
    • Provide expertise on programme structuring, planning, benefits quantification and tracking on behalf of the wider team
    • Able to analyse, diagnose and resolve highly complex problems to successful conclusion
    • Use multiple and innovative ways of communicating implications and awareness of decisions and interdependencies
    • Help undertake project and programme reviews to ensure quality and compliance with PMO governance
    • Manage the creation and delivery of the project plan, including milestones, benefits, approach and resource required.
    • Create, manage and own relevant project plans, inspiring confidence through your convictions
    • Work with each Project Managers to ensure plans are maintained and updated consistently across the programme in accordance with the PMO requirements.
    • Manage the process of identifying and updating the interdependencies between projects and programmes.
    • At any point in time, have a detailed view of the key Programme milestones for the next 12 months, including associated dependencies and risks and issues.
    • The post holder will be responsible for policy development required to support service changes during the Transformational process.
  • Communication and relationship management
    • Use highly developed leadership and influencing skills with the ability to enthuse, motivate and involve individuals and teams across the Trust, such that they understand and work to achieve the Trusts performance expectations.
    • Deploy expert communication, negotiation and influencing skills to build and maintain excellent working relationships with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders on a range of service improvement projects, driving and challenging each key working relationship to innovate and achieve reform in accordance with agreed objectives
    • Deal with complex and conflicting subject matter problems or in day to day work including the management of potentially aggressive and / or antagonistic situations with staff and stakeholders within change programmes for successful outcomes.
    • Ensure optimum engagement from staff, colleagues and stakeholders in order to deliver continuous change, securing appropriate buy in, support and understanding and effective flows of information.
    • Keeping good relations with care groups is essential in the success of this role.
  • Financial and Resources
    • Hold responsibility for a project budget, ensuring close control of all expenditure in line with Trust policy and Standing Financial Orders, setting standards for the highest levels of financial propriety across the department
    • Ensure that effective business justification is presented for allocation of any required capital funding or increase in revenue budgets, developing and presenting business cases to appropriate sub-committees where necessary.
    • Ensure delivery against all productivity and cost improvement targets
    • Hold accountability and sign off for all innovation projects and initiatives.
    • Constantly strive for value for money and greater efficiency in the use of the budget and ensure that they operate in recurrent financial balance year on year.
  • Staff Management and training
    • At all times promote an open, impartial, transparent and accountable culture within the Trust where lessons are learnt and widely implemented across the Trust
    • To model a collaborative style of working, negotiating with others to achieve the best outcomes and embedding this approach in delivery of own service
    • Transfers expertise and knowledge as appropriate, regarding innovation issues throughout the team including developing and delivering formal briefing/training to promote innovation
    • Run training sessions for staff teams within project management and change management knowledge base
    • Responsible for the management and leadership of project and assistant project managers and their deliverables, performance and development

    • Promote leadership capability within the Transformation team and support a culture of continuous learning for individuals within the wider team. The post holder will be expected to facilitate large groups of staff, patient and client groups with issues that may be contentious in major change.

    • Contribute to the formulation of operational policies and procedures in relation to new services, as required and the development of corporate documents in relation to new services if requested by the programme lead.
  • Information Management
    • Ensure there are effective systems of governance within function and role.
    • Ensure that data used to support service improvement has the appropriate checks before being used and ensuring that data quality issues are fed back to the appropriate teams.
    • Communicate clearly what information requirements are required for projects and use analytical skills to articulate requirement.
  • Research and Development
    • Draw from research available, both externally and internally to identify, develop and promote best practice
    • Draws from experience and expertise in other fields and industries, ensuring that the Trust benefits from relevant innovations

    Person Specification

    Personal specification


    • Minimum of degree level or equivalent experience
    • Experience at a senior level in a complex organisation
    • Proven track record of service improvement and/or operational management with responsibility for the full range of operational and clinical services
    • Experience of working as a operational manager in large complex environment or equivalent consultancy experience
    • Evidence of managing service change at a senior level
    • Evidence of using change/service improvement methodologies such as Six Sigma, lean to at least yellow belt level
    • Highly developed leadership and influencing skills with the ability to enthuse, motivate and involve individuals and teams
    • Ability to lead the redesign of services to ensure they are delivered to the highest standard and are cost effective


    • Information Analyst experience
    • Qualification in a Project management tools such as Prince II, MSP etc.
    • Qualification in service improvement methodologies eg Lean, Six Sigma
    • Previous role in service improvement or operational experience at service manager level or above
    • Extensive NHS experience at 1 or more acute providers
