Job summary
The post holder will be required to construct a range of specialist fixed and removable orthodontic appliances of a high level of complexity. The post holder will also be expected to provide basic dental technology support and model provision for the other departmental specialisms. This work will be carried out following prescriptions from of Orthodontics, Restorative, Maxillofacial and other appropriate clinical teams.
- The orthodontic service provides a service to correct and modify, by way of controlled tooth movement, abnormal tooth eruption, occlusion and malocclusion of patients.
- The prosthetic service provides a service to restore the loss of any number of teeth and / or surrounding tissues in patients that have lost these structures.
- The therapy devices assist in restoring or maintain a lost or inhibited function involved in or dictated by the oral environment.
Main duties of the job
To provide a basic dental and specialist orthodontic laboratory service for all of the OMF Laboratory service users. This will include but not limited to:
- The construction of bespoke specialist Orthodontic dental appliances (any stage) for example but not limited to:
- Myofunctional appliances:
Frankel I, II and III
Clarke's Twin Blocks
Hybrid functional appliances
Medium Opening Activators
- Fixed orthodontic appliances:
Quad Helixes
Thumb sucking deterrent appliances
Lingual and palatal arches
- Rapid maxillary expansion appliances:
McNamara splints
- The construction of basic prosthetic dental appliances (any stage).
- The construction of dental working, study and surgical models.
- Competence in the use of specialised dental technology equipment.
- Experience with the calibration and maintenance of specialised dental technology equipment.
- Experience and understanding / implementation of COSHH for materials used within a Dental laboratory.
- Understanding and experience of NHS / Workplace Health & Safety policy.

Job responsibilities
- Take responsibility for own working practice; construct custom made specialist orthodontic appliances (including all processes/ equipment/materials involved) to accurately fit patients following the provided prescription.
- Take responsibility for own working practice; construct custom made basic prosthetic appliances (including all processes/ equipment/ materials involved) to accurately fit patients following the provided prescription.
- Take responsibility for own working practice for the provision of accurate dental model manufacture (including all processes/equipment/materials involved) as defined by own training / education / qualifications/regulatory bodies, while following local trust and laboratory policies.
- Responsible for the management and provision of orthodontic work to all service users.
- Assist in the training, supervision and development of junior staff within the laboratory and multidisciplinary team.
- Help in the co-ordination of treatment plans and procedures (both own and laboratories).
- Take responsibility for organisation and liaising with external suppliers for the outsourcing and use of speciality Orthodontic services. The post holder would both ensuring service provider quality and that records are kept organised.
- Assist/support services/service users with technical knowledge as required on all hospital sites.
- Take responsibility for key areas of laboratory health and safety policies.
- Take responsibility for day to day stock control and managing the organisation and stock levels of specialist orthodontic stock.
- Assist in the development of laboratory provision scope and service improvements.
- Observe and comply with GHFT Health and Safety legislation to ensure safe handling and use of materials and equipment in the laboratory.
- Liaising and working with the multidisciplinary team and service users.
- Understand and comply with the According to the Medical Devices Regulations 2002 (SI 2002 No 618, as amended) (UK MDR 2002) (and any appropriate amendments/changes) and in accordance with MHRA registration and departmental licence.
- Maintain accurate adherence to laboratory digital and physical record keeping policies for service running/audit.
