Clinical Fellow in Adult Inherited Metabolic Disease
Applications are invited for a Clinical Fellow post in Adult Inherited Metabolic Disease (IMD) for one year. This would suit applicants with a background in Chemical Pathology and Metabolic Medicine, or applicants from medical specialities who wish to gain experience in IMD. The post is available for 28 hours per week and options flexible working will be considered.
The All Wales IMD Service, based at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff, is a young and dynamic unit providing services for patients with a wide range of IMDs, including enzyme replacement therapies for lysosomal storage diseases as well as general metabolic diseases. It is the only service of its kind in Wales. The unit also hosts the Cardiff Porphyria Service, which is internationally renowned and is commissioned as part of the National Acute Porphyria Service. The Cardiff Lipid Unit provides specialist input for patients with lipid disorders and hosts the regional lipoprotein apheresis service. The Department hosts the Wales Familial Hypercholesterolaemia Service.
Main duties of the job
The Clinical Fellow will primarily be based in the IMD and porphyria services, with clinical training opportunities available in other areas of metabolic medicine if desired. The Clinical Fellow will be supervised by consultant staff, and will take an active role in patient management as part of the multi-disciplinary team.
Opportunities for a suitably qualified post-holder to provide clinical validation services in the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Immunology will be available. UHW has a large and diverse laboratory providing local, regional and national services. Participation in the on-call rota for medical biochemistry will also be available to a suitably qualified applicant.
The IMD unit has a growing research base and an active quality improvement programme which the Clinical Fellow will be encouraged to engage with. There are also opportunities to develop skills in medical education and teach and train undergraduate and postgraduate trainees, as well as allied health professionals.
References will be required to cover a minimum of three years of previous employment and/or training inview of Border Immigration Agency regulations, all applicants must state their current immigration status including expiry dates.
