Job summary

The Wessex Neurological Centre (WNC) is looking for an enthusiastic consultant neurophysiologist to join our neurophysiology service. You would be joining a vibrant and friendly neurophysiology team providing neurophysiology services for the local population and the regional neurosciences centre within University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, serving a population of over three million people across the South and the Channel Islands.

The WNC is a large tertiary neurological centre which offers a wide range of Neurological and Neurosurgical services for both adult and paediatric age groups. The wider neurosciences team includes 25 adult and 6 paediatric neurologists, 12 neurosurgeons as well as neuroradiology, neuropsychology and neuropathology colleagues. There are established research links with the University of Southampton.

Job description

Job responsibilities


You will be part of a multidisciplinary team consisting of six consultant neurophysiologists and two specialist registrars, working alongside our team of twelve Physiologists to deliver a comprehensive neurophysiology service. In addition to routine outpatient EMG, evoked potential and EEG diagnostic activity, we provide inpatient services for the WNC (including the Neuro Intensive Care Unit), Paediatric Neurology and Neonatal Unit.

We have both adult and paediatric Videotelemetry beds, and perform Home VT. We are a Neuromuscular Centre of Excellence and provide the neurophysiology support for the Wessex regional epilepsy surgery service, for the functional neurosurgery (including (DBS) deep brain stimulation) programme and are part of a Childrens epilepsy surgery service (CESS) network. We provide a large volume of spinal intra-operative monitoring (IOM) and have a developing Neuro IOM service.

  • The timetable would include four EMG clinics per week.
  • Other duties include reporting inpatient and outpatient EEG
  • Supporting the specialist areas and tertiary services.
  • Activities would also include MDT meetings, clinical governance, research, teaching, training and leadership.
  • The post-holder would be expected to contribute to many aspects of the service and personal development is encouraged.

  • You will be encouraged to develop subspecialty interests and expertise. Existing interest and expertise in Videotelemetry for pre-surgical evaluation of both Paediatric and Adult patients, and in IOM, in particular DBS would be highly desirable to complement the current team.


Individuals wishing to apply must be fully registered with the General Medical Council (GMC) and should be either already on or within 6 months of eligibility to be included on the specialist register of the GMC.

The successful candidate will be employed under the terms and conditions of service for Consultants (England) 2003.

Person Specification



  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • On GMC's specialist register CCT in clinical neurophysiology, or within 6 months of expected date of CCT receipt if currently in clinical neurophysiology training in the UK or has satisfied PMETB that they have specialist training and/or qualifications that are equivalent to a CCT in clinical neurophysiology.



  • -Evidence of participation in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching



  • Higher Medical Degree
  • MRCP/FRCP or equivalent



  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in all major fields of clinical neurophysiology in adults and children
  • Experience of video-telemetry in the evaluation of adult patients for epilepsy surgery
  • Experience of video-telemetry in the evaluation of paediatric patients for epilepsy surgery


  • Experience of VT and Epilepsy Surgery - particularly Intracranial EEG/Stereo EEG, ECoG and Cortical mapping
  • Experience of Intra Operative Monitoring (IOM).



  • Demonstrate the ability to be calm, compassionate, and able to respond efficiently to various circumstances, which may change rapidly
  • Innovative with leadership qualities but also able to work within a team
  • Experience of participation in regular clinical audit
  • Aware of pressing issues facing NHS
  • Knowledge of management issues at Divisional and Trust levels
