This is an exciting time to join our Acute Medicine - nursing workforce as we further develop patient pathways.

Your key role will be to operationally manage SDEC and support with clinical quality standards are achieved across Acute Medicine by providing inspirational and visible clinical leadership to the nursing and medical teams, you will ensure the delivery of exceptional patient centered and safe care to patients across the directorate.

You will support the matron who will be responsible for the professional leadership demonstrating a supportive and flexible leadership approach as well as a proactive, responsible attitude so promoting confidence in the teams and the services.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work across the Urgent Care Division with specific line management for the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Integrated Assessment Unit (IAU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) management teams with the expectation that further teams will be developed and fall under direct line management of the post holder.

The Deputy Matron will ensure the delivery of exceptional patient centered and safe care to patients across the directorate.

They will support the matron who will be responsible for the professional leadership demonstrating a supportive and flexible leadership approach as well as a proactive, responsible attitude so promoting confidence in the team and the service.

They will be part of the senior nursing structure within the urgent care division and contribute to the overall upholding of all safety standards, efficiency and productivity KPI's and national AFPP standards.

They will provide expert urgent care knowledge and leadership in the continuing progressive development of urgent care services, specifically AMU, IAU and SDEC, and keep the patient experience at the heart of all actions.

They will explore current practice, identifying areas for development and planning the appropriate change using the research and evidence base together with experience to evaluate outcomes.

They will support the matron who has responsibility for the quality of the patient's environment in order to improve the patient's experience.

  • To act as a role model to provide expert advice and to demonstrate best practice in accordance with the NMC Code .
  • To maintain clinical credibility by acting regularly as a clinical practitioner in own area of expertise
  • To be an active agent of change and ensure the role of the Deputy Matron is continuously developed in line with local circumstances and national standards.
  • To develop and maintain a team culture in which excellence can flourish and care is focused on the needs of patients.
  • Further own professional development by ensuring that own clinical and professional knowledge is updated to include knowledge of new trends in nursing practices and support implementation at ward level.
  • Actively participate in benchmarking activity within the clinical area and implement outcome from key performance indicators for their areas.
  • To promote clinical excellence by the use and improvement of approaches based on the principles of individualised care, liaising with appropriate Specialist teams to promote clinical excellence.
  • Ensure that adequate and correct discharge planning procedures are in use on the wards and introduce care pathways as appropriate.
  • Ensure that record keeping is of the highest standard in accordance with the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping .
  • Ensure that clinical governance systems are in place to monitor, audit and develop the quality of clinical practice, in accordance with Trusts Quality Improvement Strategy.
  • Ensure that effective systems are in operation, which allow clinical supervision to take place.
  • Ensure that environments are conducive to the physical, psychological, social and spiritual well-being of the patients, ensuring that policies for Infection Control, Protection of Vulnerable Adults and Children are adhered to.
  • Promote health education of patients, relatives and staff.
  • Through the implementation and development of new teaching strategies, improve performance and accountability within the clinical areas. Develop strong links with the nurse education providers
  • To provide expert practitioner advice to the Matron and Head of Nursing.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of expanded nursing roles


Be responsible for ensuring that the Ward/Department Managers ensure safe staffing levels across area of responsibility that maintain patient safety, raising any concerns with the Senior Nurse and as required review and revise the nursing establishments and skill mix. Negotiate support via other senior nurses for the Division and where necessary seek help from other Divisions.

When on duty undertake daily visits/contacts with all wards and departments within area of responsibility maintaining a visible presence and maintaining advanced levels of communication by:
  • Applying advanced problem solving approaches, guidance and support assist with day to day problems, empowering ward sisters, team leaders, junior staff and junior medical staff to find alternative solutions to problems
  • Support the Matron in implementing local escalation procedures to resolve professional and operational issues, such as staff shortage, or where there are HR or capacity issues
  • Use own knowledge seek specialist clinical knowledge to ensure complex patient care issues are resolved
  • Being mindful of specific factors for own area of practice, and identify variances investigating and taking action where necessary
  • Reduce cancellations by ensuring effective communication with all clinical departments to ensure patients are properly prepared for their procedures
  • Develop extended roles in the department that are specific to the individual specialty of nursing
  • Ensure that robust systems are in place (mobile phone numbers, bleep numbers, extension, secretary number, schedule access, deputy details) in order that staff are able to contact them, know who is covering at time of absence and are aware of appropriate escalation policies out of hours
  • Be responsible for all decision making when the need to optimise bed availability/ create capacity to cope with additional clinical demand arises this may include arranging waiting list initiative clinics or staffing additional bed spaces in addition to the risk assessment of such actions


Using highly developed operational management knowledge and skills working closely with the Matron, Head of Nursing and Ward/Dept, managers, facilitating patients journeys through the departments ensuring all safety standards, efficiency and productivity are met by:
  • Attending bed meetings
  • Continuously assess and ensure patient placement and or discharge is appropriate
  • Advise and contribute to clinical management plans by working with medical staff colleagues to ensure timely clinical rounds within the department are undertaken to support patient flow
  • Developing nurse-led initiatives that improve and expedite patient discharge
  • Ensure staff are aware of and apply local escalation policies in relation to bed management
  • Facilitate inter and intra hospital transfers, leading the liaison within the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and appropriate care of patients
  • To participate in the audit process to improve patient care and delivery.

  • To assume budgetary responsibility for the designated area and to achieve financial balance in pay and non-pay budgets.
  • Participate in the identification of cost improvement initiatives, including Trust Efficiency Programme (TEP) options
  • To support the Matron, Directorate Manager and Head of Nursing in the investigation and management of complaints to try to ensure local resolution of complaints as far as is practicable, and to ensure practice and behaviour is altered in response to complaints management across the Trust. To provide the Head of Nursing with a regular report on the management of complaints in line with the NHS Complaints management targets
  • To provide management support to the Matron, Head of Nursing, Lead Consultant and Directorate Manager in the management and delivery of the Directorates clinical service and performance targets
  • To work directly with the Bed Management Team to manage activity effectively within the Trust
  • To ensure all staff adhere to Trust policies and procedures
  • To maintain good communication between all grades and disciplines of staff within the Division and with patients and families
  • To promote the safety and wellbeing of patients and staff in accordance with the Health and Safety policy, reporting any untoward occurrences
  • To proactively manage attendance in accordance with Trust policy

  • To work with the senior nursing team across the urgent care division with specific reference to line management responsibilities and professional and personal development, to give assurance on standards of care delivery.
  • In liaison with the Matron and Head of Nursing as appropriate, assume overall line management responsibility for the staff within the designated clinical area, undertaking all duties associated with personnel and financial management, e.g. recruitment, personal development planning and review, organisation of staff rotas disciplinary procedure, etc.
  • In conjunction with the senior sister/ charge nurses, ensure timely recruitment and appropriate selection of staff. To assist in identifying and implementing appropriate recruitment and retention initiatives
  • To monitor the nursing establishment adhering to the E-Rostering policies
  • To develop and lead the nursing workforce within the designated area in implementing the Trusts objectives in relation to: Clinical Governance patient involvement, providing a particular link to the Patient Advocacy and Liaison Service, practice development the production of standards and the undertaking of benchmarking exercises
  • To ensure that all staff access appropriate mandatory training and ensure that all training is recorded on the appropriate information system.

  • Promote the development of the educational environment by actively contributing to the educational development of all qualified and unqualified staff.
  • Continually evaluate own and others practice using a range of evidence-based approaches
  • Critically appraise and synthesise the outcomes of relevant research and evaluations and apply them to the improving practice
  • Alert appropriate agencies and people to gaps in evidence and/or knowledge that require evaluation or research
  • Undertake research in own specialist area
  • Disseminate results / research findings to the Trust Board. Implement research findings appropriate to practice
  • To lead on benchmark and quality audits ensuring staff receive feedback on the results, and to implement the actions as directed
