We are looking for an highly motivated Band 7 Dietitian to join our integrated Diabetes and Endocrine team, to provide excellent inpatient diabetes care. This is a brand new post to the Hospital, which looks to enhance and complement our existing diabetes inpatient service and support provided by our adult acute dietetic team.

This is a 1 year funded project by NE London ICB . You will join a dynamic team based at Homerton Healthcare. As a growing diabetes service, meeting the needs of an expanding local population, the diabetes service currently provides a number of routine and specialist services, including dietitian and nurse-led clinics in the community and out-patients, ante-natal and pre-conception clinic, insulin pump clinic, multidisciplinary clinic support emergency reviews and managing routine and urgent ward referrals. We are also a recognised DAFNE and X-PERT centre.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will provide clinical nutritional expertise to the inpatient with Diabetes.

Applicants should possess some clinical knowledge of diabetes, and be able to show knowledge of complex nutrition support. This should be supported by recent experience in caring for people with diabetes.

You should have proven management and leadership skills as well as the ability to demonstrate initiative and innovation, effective communication skills and the ability to organise your own caseload.

Education / Qualifications


  • BSc Nutrition & Dietetics or relevant postgraduate qualification HCPC registered as a Dietitian


  • Nationally recognised course in CSII/ insulin pumps
  • BIDAC or DAFNE trained
  • Behaviour Change training
  • Non-Medical Prescribing course
  • X-PERT/ DESMOND trained
  • Member of BDA and /or member of relevant dietitians specialist groups e.g PENG or Diabetes Support Group (DSG)

Skills/ Abilities


  • Excellent oral and written communication skills with people from a variety of backgrounds e.g. via advocacy/interpreters
  • Experience of delivering undergraduate student supervision and clinical education to graduate standard in area of speciality
  • Supervision of junior members of clinical staff
  • Ability to work effectively single handedly with individuals and groups
  • Ability to demonstrate behaviour change facilitation/ motivational interviewing
  • Ability to problem solve, analyse complex clinical problems and create practical solutions to provide best clinical care
  • Accurate anthropometric measurements and skills e.g. weights, heights, skinfold calipers to assess patients nutritional status and devise clinical plan
  • Ability to communicate life threatening/complex medical conditions in a sensitive and easily understandable language
  • Ability to present complex information to groups over 20 either to staff or patients
  • Ability to provide highly specialised advice concerning the care of patients
  • Regularly undertakes R& D activity e.g. Critical Appraisal
  • Ability to take own initiative and to be the lead for clinical speciality
  • Keyboard skills - data inputting, word processing, internet and dietary analysis



  • Extensive experience of working in Diabetes Dietetics
  • Experience of undertaking audit and changing practice in accordance to findings
  • Working in the field of Diabetes
  • Understanding of team dynamics and experience of working within a team
  • Experience and working knowledge CGM/ Flash Glucose Monitoring and interpreting data
  • Experience with enteral tube feeding and nutrition support
  • Experience of working with patients with multiple pathologies, undertaking assessment, making treatment and discharge plans


  • Experience and working knowledge of CSII/ insulin pumps
  • Experience of critical care and parenteral nutrition



  • In depth knowledge to expert level in the diabetes speciality
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of managing nutritional in patients with physical and psychological impairment.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of enteral tube feeding


  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of enteral feeding including ethics of initiating and withdrawal of nutrition support
