Job summary

We are recruiting for a Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

We have an exciting opportunity for the right person to join our children and young people's diabetes service.

You will be working alongside specialist nurses, who support children & young people from all over East & North Hertfordshire and the surrounding areas, in the home, schools and in the acute hospital setting.

We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual with an interest in children & young people with diabetes who has both excellent clinical and communication skills and enjoys working within a team.

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for the provision of high quality, patient focused care.

Responsible for assessing, developing and implementing specialist nursing care programmes.

Also responsible for providing specialist advice and support to, and liaising with, other staff.

We will provide the training and support for the successful candidate if you bring the motivation and enthusiasm and are willing to meet the challenge of a specialist role.

The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a course in the management of childhood diabetes, if currently without that qualification, and other training relevant to the post. Once the appropriate courses completed, the successful candidate will participate and support the CYPD Out of Hours Service.

Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • Registered Children's Nurse
  • Professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Willingness to undertake further training as required
  • ENB 998/Mentorship and Preceptorship Qualification
  • Understanding of Diabetes specific to Children and Young People.


Desirable

  • Completed a programme of study in Children and Young People Diabetes (CYPD)
  • Insulin Pump therapy qualification
  • Evidence of recent clinical practice in CYPD
  • Community Experience
  • Link nurse role/Special interest in CYPD


Previous Experience

Essential

  • Post qualification experience within Paediatric Nursing - 2 years minimum
  • Proven management experience (Ward or Equivalent)
  • Understanding of current policies and documents relating to Children and Young People with Diabetes.
  • Experience supporting caseload of patients
  • Having the ability to work under pressure to manage workload and meet deadlines.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Experience in writing, implementing and evaluating treatment plans
  • Sound understanding of Young people and the difficulties they can experience and is confident to work with them and their carers
  • Used to dealing with sensitive issues


Desirable

  • Experience of delivering training, presenting and assessing professionals, families, students.
  • Experience writing/reviewing and updating policy considering new evidence based practice.
  • Experience working as an autonomous practitioner
  • Experience in the monitoring of medication side effects
  • Experience of audit or research
  • Experience of receiving clinical supervision.


Knowledge/Skills

Essential

  • Demonstrates excellent team work and commitment to Multi-disciplinary working.
  • Current knowledge of Nursing and Health issues
  • Knowledge of children's related legislation e.g. Children's Act, NSF
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety Practices including Lone working
  • Participate in and support the CYPD Out of Hours Service (once completed appropriate courses)
  • Knowledge of child protection workings and practices
  • Knowledge of clinical governance
  • Good level of computer literacy
  • Good time management skills and time keeping abilities/ ability to manage complex & competing issues
  • Good organisational skills
  • Good Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work autonomously using own initiative

  • Ability to quickly appraise situation and act accordingly
  • Undertake out of hours support service as part of rota following relevant training

  • Knowledge of CYPD related national drivers e.g. RCHPCH Peer review programme, Best practice tariff CYPD knowledge, NPDA
  • Ability to undertake risk assessments
