Job summary

Seaview Ward is a mixed sex ward, with a total of 14 beds providing a high quality of care and treatment for patients who have physical, social, psychological and emotional health needs. The purpose of the ward is to offer comprehensive assessments and treatment enabling Service Users to have shorter stays in hospital and to develop clear plans of care.

We are looking for suitably qualified and caring individuals who wish to work in a fast paced and challenging environment. You will have excellent clinical skills and be a team player who is emotionally intelligent and able to remain calm when managing potentially testing situations.

We would welcome applications from newly qualified nurses and we provide a very comprehensive and fully supported Preceptorship Programme for newly qualified healthcare professionals.

We offer a full induction programme to all new staff members on joining the ward and following successful completion of your 3 month probation period you will meet with your supervisor to discuss your personal developmentplan which will identify your learning and training needs, so we can ensure you have all the skills you need to be the best you can bein your role. As befits a specialist service there will be opportunities to train in areas such as DBT, enhanced risk assessment and physical health interventions.

Main duties of the job

The ward team are highly motivated and have a track record of implementing recovery-based care, with an emphasis on therapeutic and diverse interventions. We work closely as a multi-disciplinary team and value learning, having regular teaching and supervision with a shared vision and action plan for the service.

The Multi-disciplinary team on the Ward provides treatment and care for a wide range of mental health illnesses which include Schizophrenia, Bipolar, Depression, Anxiety and Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder. The aim of all staff is to provide a high quality of care and treatment for patients who have physical, social, psychological and emotional health needs and enable them to return home with support from the Home Treatment Team and / or their Community Mental Health Team.

You will be required to undertake aPrevention and Management of Violence and Aggression courseand it is a condition of your employment that you successfully complete all aspects of this course; if this is not achieved you will not be able to commence working in the post.

Employment in this post requires an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check, which the Trust will cover the cost of. Applicants who subscribe to the DBS update service are able to present a valid DBS certificate instead of requiring a new check.

Person Specification

Knowledge, skills and training

Essential

  • Registered Nurse (Mental Health)
  • Preceptorship or working towards it
  • Ability to take charge of a ward/case load regularly
  • Ability to supervise other staff
  • Supervised experience gained during clinical placements
  • Ability to mentor students


Information Technology

Essential

  • Basic IT skills, normally obtained through practice or practical training


Personal Qualities/Attributes

  • Ability to work with minimum supervision / unsupervised

Additional requirements

  • Ability to meet contractual requirements and participate in 24 hour care
  • A level of fitness and ability to participate and complete PMVA, Breakaway training and Manual Handling (practice and theory).
  • Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English to a standard which enables the post holder to carry out the full range of duties and responsibilities of the role effectively.
  • Subject to the provisions of the Equality Act, able to travel using own vehicle on Trust business.
