Are you a motivated and talented nurse with experience in Paediatric Respiratory, Medicine and Long Term Ventilation or High Dependency Care? Do you want to work in a challenging environment?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse on Ward 2a, Respiratory & Long Term Ventilation Ward at The Great North Children's Hospital. Ward 2a is a 21 bedded general medical inpatient unit which provides specialist care for children and young people who have tracheostomies and require long-term ventilation. We also care for children and young people with conditions in the following specialities
  • Immunology
  • Endocrine
  • Metabolic
  • Haemophilia

The busy children's ward has an identified Long Term Ventilation Bay, and newly commissioned dedicated High Dependency Area. We require someone who is adaptable to work in all areas of the ward and who is a real team player.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidates will have extensive post registration experience in caring for this complex and diverse patient group and knowledge of the specific needs of these specialised services.

The successful applicants will need to demonstrate excellent leadership and communication skills and will be expected to play a role in the management and leadership of a team of nurses, healthcare assistants and supportive staff.

Exciting opportunity has come available for experienced paediatric nurses to join the HDU team. An established team who delivers HDU level care to the highest standard to a wide range of children from multi-speciality teams.

As a nurse in any of the wards and departments you will assess, plan and support delivery of care to ensure this is delivered to a high standard. You will work alongside a wide variety of professionals to deliver the very best family centred care.

You will receive training and ongoing support for enhanced skills from the Education Team relevant to the ward or department where you are employed. Enhanced skills may include, IV drug administration, care of gastrostomies and tracheostomies, delivery of breathing support systems like AIRVO and Non-invasive ventilation.

Job responsibilities

All new starters will have a supernumerary period and work alongside an experienced nurse. Wards and departments have individual competency frameworks to work towards.

The Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse is also responsible for ensuring the provision of safe and effective patient care, within the context of highly vulnerable children and young people who are undergoing complex treatment requiring high dependency care. The successful candidate will also have responsibility in supporting the development of junior staff, for example IV assessment and training.
  • To support the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP, acting as a deputy when the Senior Sister / Charge Nurse / Senior ODP is absent.
  • In areas within the organisation Nurses / ODPs may be banded at 6 by virtue clinical reasons, for example, critical care.
  • Provide effective support and leadership to staff, patients and carers within the Theatre or Department.
  • Act as role model, teacher and supervisor for junior staff and students
  • Ensure systems are in place to provide the continuity of safe effective care for patients at all times.
  • Effective member of the multi-disciplinary team
  • May be required to participate in an On-call rota as required.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Education


  • Registered Nurse (appropriate to branch) / Operating Department Practitioner
  • Current NMC / HCPC registration
  • Diploma in a health related subject, prepared to take degree level study
  • Specialist qualification if relevant to role or previous experience
  • Meets Nursing and Midwifery Council standards for student supervision and assessment (formally Mentorship)


  • Degree in health related subject
  • Relevant specialist qualification

Knowledge & Experience


  • Previous post registration experience which must be relevant and recent
  • Evidence of achievements and career development in current post and of on-going professional development
  • Understanding of professional accountability in a leadership role
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant NHS policy or project specific policy context.
  • Has understanding / experience of adult / child safeguarding


  • Audit / research experience
  • Relevant clinical skills relating to the specialty e.g. cannulation / IV drug administration / scrub skills relevant to speciality / anaesthetic skills appropriate to speciality.

  • Good IT skills
