Job summary

The appointed fellows will provide senior surgical input to emergency general surgery patients at all stages from initial triage and assessment to surgery and post-operative care. Duties include oncall at middle grade level with access to emergency theatre if the fellow is on call or assessment/admission of emergencies in A&E, surgical assessment unit/ SCDU when on normal duties.

The successful candidates will be able to rotate between Upper GI and Lower GI with dedicated MDTS. We are the 4th largest colorectal cancer resection unit in the UK.

Job responsibilities

The appointed fellows will provide senior surgical input to emergency general surgery patients at all stages from initial triage and assessment to surgery and post-operative care. Duties include oncall at middle grade level with access to emergency theatre if the fellow is on call or assessment/admission of emergencies in A&E, surgical assessment unit/ SCDU when on normal duties.

The successful candidates will be able to rotate between Upper GI and Lower GI with dedicated MDTS. We are the 4th largest colorectal cancer resection unit in the UK.

The fellows will be assessed through regular meetings with the clinical supervisors to make sure career progression and also the passionate to develop higher surgical skills despite in a permanent post.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Eligible for full GMC registration with Licence to Practise at the time of appointment
  • MRCS or equivalent


Desirable

  • ALS Certification
  • Postgraduate qualification


Clinical Experience

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required at ST3 level in General Surgery
  • Ability to offer clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within specialty
  • Ability to take responsibility for clinical care of patients
  • Knowledge of subspecialties where specified


Desirable

  • Experience of Audit


Teaching Experience

Essential

  • Ability to organise and deliver teaching across the whole undergraduate curriculum
  • Experience of medical teaching


Desirable

  • Experience of examining medical Undergraduates
