The Clinical Engineering team are ready to help you reach your potential, supporting you to achieve your level 2 apprenticeship qualification in Healthcare Science, whilst having on the job experience the start of your career in the NHS.

As part of this role, you will support the Medical Equipment Library team with the management, supply and retrieval of medical equipment to the wider hospital, as well as broadening your knowledge of health and safety in a healthcare setting. To give you a flavour of the role, a day in the life would include:

Collection of Medical equipment from collection points on the wards

Cleaning/disinfection of the medical equipment in the returns library

Update loans in the equipment library

Using RFID Scanners on wards to update loan records

Top up the consumables within the equipment library

Servicing and repair on low-risk devices e.g. thermometers, o2 flowmeters

In order to be eligible to undertake this apprenticeship, you must have at least a level 1 Functional Skills in English and Maths. You should be a confident communicator, with the ability to speak with both staff and patients. Ideally, you will have had some experience of a healthcare setting (through either work or work experience), or customer care experience (through either work or work experience) however, this is not a requirement for application to the role.

Job responsibilities

Job Summary:

1. To supply, retrieve and support Medical Equipment Library (MEL) equipment and other equipment used in locations supported by Clinical Engineering.

2. To update system records of repairs, loans and returns as required.

3. To recognise and help resolve issues that users borrowing equipment may experience concerning cleanliness, unavailability, technical issues and use.

4. To promote the Medical Equipment Library as a first class service meeting the needs of wards and departments.

5. To communicate promptly and effectively with service users and Clinical Engineering for the optimal running of the MEL Service.

6. Provide the range of service support as required in your supported areas to an agreed individual or team in a highly efficient manner contributing to the smooth and efficient running of that area.

7. Work with those you support to develop a collaborative working partnership, which positively contributes to their overall efficiency & role performance.

8. Proactively identify additional activities in accordance with your role, which would increase the efficiency of those you support and instigate these activities in agreement with your team.

9. Work collaboratively with other Support services staff and support them to deliver successfully as required.

10. Maintain and improve your knowledge & understanding of the health service and, more specifically, the area of focus for those you support.

11. Works using own initiative but following departmental systems of work with guidance available when necessary.

12. Supply and retrieve Medical Equipment Library (MEL) equipment from, and to, the wards and departments that request it

13. Ensure equipment that is collected from customers is clean so as to be readily available for the next user to borrow.

14. Ensure equipment that is in stock in the MEL is clean, serviceable, stored correctly in the designated location and has the necessary accessories for the next user to borrow.

15. Within their ability and knowledge provide help and guidance to clinical staff with the operation and use of medical equipment the MEL supplies.

16. Visually inspect and check equipment for signs of damage or faults, removing the equipment from MEL stock, rectifying where possible and updating equipment records as required.

17. Ensure Clinical Engineering technicians are notified if the problem is beyond the scope of the MEL for rectification.

18. Record all repairs, loans and returns to the MEL on the computerized information system.

19. Conduct audits of equipment in the MEL and on loan, updating the information system as necessary.

20. Make use of the MEL information system to identify where equipment in short supply may be retrieved from.

21. Make use of the MEL information system and other information sources such as spreadsheets to answer queries on availability and distribution of equipment.

22. Keep the MEL secure and tidy and ensure that it is easy and safe for customers to find equipment out of hours. Ensure it is easy for customers to update the loan sheet when the MEL is unstaffed.

23. Deliver consumables and accessories where required to meet customer requests.

24. Maintain effective working relationships with other members of staff of the MEL, Clinical Engineering Section and customers of the MEL.

25. Identify operational issues with the MEL and propose solutions for consideration.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to use an information system.
  • Ability to add information to an existing spreadsheet.
  • Able to lift and carry medical equipment and use a trolley in transporting large single items or collections of equipment.
  • Able to learn, understand and follow policies such as infection prevention.


Desirable

  • Previously worked in an NHS hospital in ward areas
  • Knowledge of the function of a Medical Equipment Library
  • Knowledge of general ward-based medical equipment
