Job summary
An opportunity has arisen within our Respiratory Physiology and Sleep Department for a Practitioner Grade Healthcare Scientist. The Department of Respiratory Physiology and Sleep is an IQIPS accredited Physiology Department offering a comprehensive respiratory and sleep diagnostic and therapeutic service.
The post has the following principal areas of responsibility;
Undertakes routine and specialised lung function testing.
Performs calibration and quality control procedures on all laboratory equipment.
Undertakes clinical supervision and training for less experienced staff
Updates own professional knowledge
Participates in departmental research.

Main duties of the job
To apply you must be enthusiastic to work in the respiratory and sleep physiology field and have a desire to continue with training and personal development. You must have excellent communication skills, be able to use your own initiative and be able to work as part of a multidisciplinary team across the Trust. You will be expected to be involved in departmental research projects/audit and to take on small areas of responsibility within the department.
You must possess a BSc in Clinical Physiology/Healthcare Science and be studying for or completed the ARTP professional examinations. AHCS registration is desirable.
This post offers a fixed term one year contract of 37.5 hours per week to cover maternity leave. The department offers extended working days for our patients and it is expected that all staff work one evening per week. Job responsibilities
As a Practitioner Grade Physiologist you would be expected to deliver a standard respiratory and sleep investigative service which includes spirometry, lung volumes, gas transfer, blood gas measurements and bronchodilator reversibility assessments, respiratory muscle function and diagnostic sleep studies and CPAP implementation. You will also assist with more specialised measurements such as cardiopulmonary exercise testing.
The post holder will perform a range of respiratory investigations including spirometry, full lung function testing, reversibility studies and blood gas measurements. You will need to demonstrate competency in the performance of routine lung function testing in order to be considered for the position.
Main Duties/ Responsibilities
Participate in the standard setting for all routine test procedures performed and equipment used, including participation in the development of standard operating procedures.
Contribute to the maintenance of safe working practices within the department, ensuring compliance with all Health and Safety legislation, other relevant legislation and Trust policies.
Contribute to the day to day running of the department, including appointment provision and stock control.
Undertake specified administrative tasks, under supervision, for development within an agreed personal development plan.
Plan and prioritise own work load.
Collect and record calibration and quality control data to ensure that equipment is functioning to agreed standards and specifications and is documented.
Undertake maintenance and cleaning of laboratory equipment.
Perform the full range of basic lung function tests, without supervision, on patients of all ages, to obtain good quality diagnostic information.
Perform more specialised procedures including; flight assessments and field exercise testing.
Accurately record observations and produce technical reports on the range of tests performed.
Testing patients of all ages in a variety of locations. This will involve communicating complex instructions and clinical information effectively to patients of all ages and relatives to ensure cooperation and compliance and to obtain accurate technical and clinical data.
On-going interpretation of lung function results with a view to rebooking for further investigations.
Responsible for planning own workload throughout the working day and ensuring completion of work in time allocated.
Ensure that all tests performed are according to relevant professional and departmental guidelines at all times.
Taking responsibility for the safe use of expensive equipment (�30,000 +)
