Job summary

Kettering General Hospital NHS Trust would like to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic Orthoptist to join their Eye Team. You will be joining a friendly and supportive team, operating over three sites, consisting of three Orthoptists and seven Consultant Ophthalmologists. We have a varied and interesting caseload of patients and the post holder will be involved in assessment of patients as part of multi-disciplinary teams.

Kettering General Hospital is looking for someone to come and join our busy and thrilling department on a fixed term maternity leave cover. This is a perfect opportunity to gain experience working in an Acute Hospital whereby you will be able to develop your skills and expand your knowledge in a supportive environment.

The team are looking for someone to work 22.5 hours per week as part of a job share with another member of staff.

Main duties of the job

  • To form part of the clinical team providing a full range of orthoptic care to patients presenting to the department, and to undertake related tasks and projects.
  • To provide Orthoptic Services at Kettering General Hospital and outreach clinics as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To assess, diagnose and manage patients referred to the Orthoptic Department.
  • To provide autonomous Orthoptic management of all types of ocular motility defects and be responsible for managing specialised and complex patients.o To be responsible as an autonomous practitioner for the evaluation of visual acuity and visual fields referred from specialist services.o To provide teaching and supervision of Pre-registered Opticians and Medical students.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Bachelor of Science in Orthoptics BSc(Orth), BMedSci (Orthoptics) and/or a diploma from the British Orthoptic Council (DBO).
  • registered with the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC).
  • Evidence of professional development


Knowledge/Experience

Essential

  • Experience of clinical orthoptics
  • Treatment and investigation of common eye conditions e.g. Cataract, glaucoma etc. An understanding of ophthalmology and other conditions which affect the eyes, in particular thyroid disease, diabetes, stroke and hypertension.
  • Ability to examine, diagnose and treat Orthoptic patients of all age


Desirable

  • Varied experience in different eye units to enable knowledge of alternative views and ways of working
