We are recruiting for an Occupational Therapist who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients tojoin our expanding Stroke Therapy Team delivering a high quality service to our acute and hyper acute stroke unit at Lister Hospital in Stevenage.

The stroke unit is a 44 bedded hub for patients throughout our region. We are going through a period of significant investment in the staffing of the unit and this is a great opportunity to be part of the leadership team at the forefront of this growth.

We are looking for someone with previous experience of team leadership and clinical expertise within the stroke field.

We are able to offer you the opportunity to work in a well established multi disciplinary team and to develop your OT skills and clinical leadership.

This post may suit an experienced band 6 OT looking to move into their first band 7 role or a band 7 looking for a new role.

Main duties of the job

To provide clinical and professional leadership to a team of qualified staff and technical instructors. To attend operational and service related meetings as a representative of OT/Acute Stroke Services, to advise on service developments in line with national standards, guidelines and current evidence base.

To take a lead role in the assessment and treatment of Stroke patients; with diverse, chronic presentation and highly complex physical and psychological presentation. To assist in the formulation of clinical diagnosis and treatment indicated and maintain records as an autonomous practitioner and ensure others do the same.

To plan, coordinate and evaluate specifically the OT interventions provided to Stroke patients on a day to day basis, and to contribute to the wider Therapy service.

To be responsible for and to undertake a clinical caseload to a high professional standard, using specialist knowledge and skills from theoretical and practical experience.

To undertake/lead evidence-based audit and research projects to develop and enhance personal and team's clinical practice with Stroke Unit; To make recommendations to therapy stroke lead / Head of Service for changes to practice by the team; To implement specific changes to practice; To write and/or contribute to service standards, protocols and clinical care pathways.

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training

Essential

  • Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy
  • HCPC Registration
  • DBS clearance
  • Knowledge and application of Professional Code of Conduct and Ethics
  • Evidence of continued professional development


Desirable

  • Membership of appropriate special interest group
  • Practice placement educator


Previous Experience

Essential

  • Previous relevant NHS/Social Services Post Graduate experience, In addition, significant post registration experience within stroke
  • Evidence of active involvement in Service Improvement (to include appraisal, audit and implementation of change)
  • Evidence of research/audit projects undertaken
  • Knowledge and experience of implementation of standards and national guidelines as relating to Stroke specialty
  • Implementation and adherence to College of Occupational Therapy Standards/Guidelines


Skills

Essential

  • Significant post registration experience within stroke (including Acute Stroke Unit experience)
  • Significant team management and leadership experience
  • Knowledge of relevant standardised assessment tools and outcome measures relevant to Stoke specialty
  • Highly developed understanding of the OT process and terms of reference
  • Knowledge of advanced anatomy and physiology related to Stroke
  • Able to demonstrate in depth skills in the assessment and application of a range of specific skills, to include: splinting, postural management and seating, cognition and memory
  • Highly specialist knowledge of moving and handling legislation and knowledge of current moving and handling best practice and associated equipment
  • Clear, concise ability to communicate effectively to a variety of audiences
  • Able to influence, guide, teach, motivate and lead others
  • Experience of integrated Therapy team working and leadership
  • Proven ability to lead change management
  • Ability to reflect on own practise and that of others
  • Evidence of development in CPD portfolio
  • Ability to promote development in others. Experience of supervision and appraisal of more junior members of staff.
