Our dynamic Finance Team supporting a 2bn+ NHS Foundation Trust with a track record of high quality on the job training are looking for a Senior Financial Management Assistant. The role is essential in ensuring accurate, timely and insightful financial information, analysis, and reporting.

The R& D Financial Management Team within the Trust offers a comprehensive financial management service, supporting budget holders to deliver on objectives. We offer a wealth of learning and development to help you achieve your career goals and opportunities to take your career to the next level. We work on a hybrid model with a blend of office based, on site, and remote working. Office based days will be at our newly refurbished offices at Regent Court which is accessible via public transport, a few minutes from Five Ways station. On site working will be from our hospital sites when required. Remote working will be from home for up to 2 days per week. Main duties of the job

Act as the lead financial specialist for a number of R& D Grants, supporting the Project Manager, PI's, Clinical Leads and Head of RD& I Finance in providing a comprehensive financial and performance management service to the Research Projects.

Influence decision making within the RD& I Department through the provision of business and expert financial advice and will be expected to work independently and pro-actively, using their own initiative & produce accurate, timely and appropriate monthly financial and performance management information

Calculate accruals, prepayments and adjustments to be reflected in the monthly management accounts, compiling audit backup and monthly, quarterly and EOY reporting, while also directly supervising assistant management accountants and be responsible for their personal development and performance.

Ensure that monthly financial performance information is communicated to budget holders and lead the annual budget setting process for their Directorate, supporting the application of new grants contributing to cost negotiations.

Train and provide advice to budget holders, ensuring controls are in place and SFI's are followed.

Person Specification



  • * Five Grade GCSE s at Grade 4 or above (or A to C pre 2019 grading) including Maths & English.


  • * Progression to CCAB Qualification or significant relevant experience



  • * Experience of working in Management Accounts,
  • * Good Understanding of management accounting concepts and techniques.


  • * Experience preferably within the NHS or another large complex organisation, for long enough to have acquired a good working knowledge of the annual cycle from financial planning through to year end forecasting and preparation of year-end accounts.
  • * Working Knowledge or an interest in NHS including understanding of key targets and the performance management framework.

Additional Criteria


  • * Ability to supervise junior staff, enforcing Trust policies/SFIs.
  • * Numerate with strong analytical skills.
  • * Proficient in the use of spreadsheets, databases and computerised ledger systems, requiring good keyboard skills.
  • * Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • * Ability to explain financial concepts to non-finance staff.
  • * Ability to interpret and present financial information in a meaningful way to aid decision making.
  • * Ability to influence/negotiate with operational and clinical staff on contentious issues -- e.g. Cost Improvement Programmes.
  • * Ability to prioritise workload and achieve tight deadlines.
  • * Evidence of strong team working skills
  • * Ability to use initiative to overcome problems.
  • * Commitment to development and training of staff.
  • * Displays smart appearance and integrity.
  • * Reliable, punctual, pro-active approach. Ability to travel to fulfil the role, both between hospital sites and elsewhere, as required.
