The Orthoptic department is looking for an individual who is motivated and hardworking and enjoys helping and supporting others, to join our Ophthalmic Technician team.
This post is suitable for an Ophthalmic technician with previous experience in the assessment of Humphrey and Goldmann visual fields, OCT and Visual acuity. The post holder will work face to face with patients, undertaking clinical diagnostics in readiness for patients to be reviewed by medical, nurses or allied health professionals.
The post may be offered at band 4 for candidate who have not had the required experience for all diagnostic tests. Training will be offered.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work as part of a team of 10 ophthalmic technicians undertaking a range of ophthalmic diagnostics including Humphrey and Goldmann visual fields, Optical Coherence Tonometry, Biometry, visual acuity. As part of the Glaucoma Virtual clinic service, you will undertake diagnostic interventions including Goldmann Applanation Tonometry, medication compliance/concordance, sign and symptom review. You will also undertake the day to day supervision of junior colleagues as well as provide supervision, tuition and competency assessment of junior colleagues.

- Training to BSc or equivalent knowledge and skills, and significant practice as an ophthalmic technician
Experience
Essential
- Clinical experience as an Ophthalmic Technician or similar ophthalmic practitioner role
- Must have undertaken theoretical training in Glaucoma and the investigative procedures involved in its diagnosis and management at a Degree level or equivalent
- Must have the theoretical knowledge and clinical skills to interpret clinical test results, compare these to those previously obtained in order to determine the need and level of urgency for referral or immediate consultation with a more senior member of the multi-disciplinary team
- Must have the theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in order to recognise when to modify testing techniques to address acquired symptoms etc
- Ability to allocate clinical and administrative tasks to junior colleagues based on their knowledge, skills and competency
- Must have a theoretical knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the eye, visual pathway and brain
- Experience undertaking regular clinical audits. Participation in clinical trials and research as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
- Clinical experience working with a range of adult and paediatric patients, many of whom have significant sensory impairment and or learning difficulties
